    I love this place. I cant get enough. too bad i live like two hours away pr else i'd be here all the damn time. Everytime i fly outta of SFO i try to stop here and get a sandwhich. yummy. I usually get the piccalo or the sleeper. But their seafood sandwhich is good also but its only there on the weekends i think. but yeah great place love it love it love it.. Ohh yeah half of a sandwhich is filling but i cant get enough so i always finsh it. Althogh sometimes the service is a hit and miss they can be a little rude but over all good place.

    I have been eating darby dans for over 10 years and i HAVE NOT recieved a bad sandwich. If its your first time -Dont look at the menu just say "ill have a sleeper" After many years of eating just sleepers i finnally tried something from the kitched ,i got the chiwawa ,and it was very good as well And cant forget the nice ladies that make it happen ,Always smiling and enjoying them self .

    I have been coming here for years and I shoulda started yelping like 10 years ago..Anywho this is one of my fave sandwich spots, (Roxies too) the management has changed, I think his name is Hong. But they take credit cards now! Their dutch crunch bread is good and fresh and they make the sandwiches the way you like it. You can call orders in, I used to fax (lol that's old school) but they have friendly service. Darby Deezies you can't go wrong.

    I wouldn't say best sandwich place ever, I reserve that for awhile, but they have some really STACKED sandwiches in South SF/Brisbane area. For about an extra dollar or so, you get a much better sandwich than you can get at Subways and definitely better than anything you can get from Quizno's. We had a meeting and needed 20+ sandwiches. Definitely do their specials. Dan Darby is good if you don't want a sandwich on a roll. I also recommend the Piccolo and the Sleeper. If you're not particularly into spicy, ask for the jalapeno's on the side that way you can put some of it into your sandwich or test it out to see if it is too spicy for your tastebuds. And now I'm hungry just writing about this place.. never good. I was kinda disappointed that I ordered a day early for the crab salad... :( Also, try their dutch crunch bread, it is pretty good.

    I rate this at about a 3.5-4 depending on the day I'm having..So the sandwiches are good so far as I have experienced. The bread, meat, garlic-mayo and for an extra price they can add sprouts and cucumbers (I always add these to my sandwiches). However it gets pricy (hence the low rating) A regular roast beefon dutch crunch (including extras) runs about $7 and some change...that doesn't even include a drink to wash the thing down... Lastly theres a hidious old woman who mans the cash register, I mean she is this tall, white hair, wrinkled rude woman who is always there when me and my husband go there, and I just cringe when we go to pay...I like getting sanwiches here, but only if I'm in the area

    Great little sandwich place close by my work. All their ingredients are fresh here. Hubby and I usually get the sleeper and have it warmed up. Dutch crunch and garlic mayo spread mmmm.

    Oh.... Darby Dan's say Hello to my little friend Little Luca.... I wanna love you but your sandwiches just don't bring all the kids to the yard like your fellow sandwich makers. Becca had the Turkey? mmmm... ok she said a little dry. I had the good ole grill cheese and bacon and wish I just would have got the bacon=( Better luck next time...     My good friend and business associate took me here for a quick lunch last Friday for a pastrami on Dutch crunch. It was my first time here, but overall, I was impressed. Looked to be a great place to get a good sandwich and is my new favorite sandwich shop in the South SF area. Naturally, the sandwich didn't compare to the authentic hot pastrami sandwiches I've had at Carnegie Deli in NY, but as far as sub sandwiches go, it was still really tasty and satisfying. Lastly, I was told that their sandwiches used to be considerably bigger than they were during my visit, so I guess perhaps the economy is taking its toll. Even then, you could tell by the long lines at lunch that this is one popular place. I'll definitely be back in the future to try other items on their menu, especially if I'm in the area and don't want to drive all the way to the marina to hit my favorite...Lucca Deli.

    This is one of the best places to get a sandwich. It isn't quite a Roxy's (located in SF), but down the peninsula this is the place to get a sandwich. The Darby Dan or The Sleeper are my sandwiches of choice, and you really can't go wrong with fresh potato salad, wide array of chips to choose from, and a friendly staff! They also have a grill t hat serves burgers and such! Great place to go for 49er games!

    Crab salad sandwich. BOMB! Get it with the dutch crunch bread! They should toast this bread tho, to make it crispier.. thats how i like my bread. Jalapeno spread. BOMB! Adds a nice little kick to the sandwich. Go try for yourself and see. I'll be coming back here!

    all the sandwiches are great but i have to say you have to get the "half and half", which is half crab salad and half shrimp salad. They have some sort of garlic paste with just a hint of some sort of hot. The pricing is reasonable and they have alot of seating. and may i say the brownies by the register are just awesome. dont get the cookies, because its the same price and you get more brownie then cookie for the same deal. Restaurant is real clean, alot of beverages to choose from, and the workers are real helpful and nice. They even got a bar and some tvs showing espn. hit it hard my friends.

    Read a lot about this sandwich place and decided to give it a try. It's located in a pretty random and unpopulated area and looked like it was connected to a hotel. Surprisingly, it was pretty busy around 1:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. I decided to try the Darby Dan sandwich which consists of ham, Italian salami, Mortadella, jalapeno spread, mayo, mustard, tomatoes & lettuce all wrapped in dutch crunch bread. I guess my expectations coming in were really high because I thought the sandwich was good but not spectacular. I feel like anyone can put this sandwich together. Perhaps they could come up with some unique signature sauce. What I enjoyed most though was the jalapeno spread. I'm a big fan of jalapenos and jalapeno flavored everything so it's nice to have every inch of the sandwich lightly covered with it instead of taking a bite into a sandwich and not knowing whether my mouth will be flaming in the next couple seconds or not.

    Great place to ditch work...huge sandwiches, can barely fit in you mouth ("that's what she said"). Good prices, fairly easy location, but you can't walk there the biotech circle. I could see a man vs. food episode occurring here. How does that guy have a show?

    havent been back in a while, so thought i would stop by for lunch. (also just didnt like genen-cafe food again) ordered the Darby Dan's Sandwich (ham mortadella italian salami and cheese) on dutch crunch with everything [mayo mustard garlic mayo jalepeno sauce]. the bread wasnt super crunchy today, which actually was okay with me since it usually tears the roof of my mouth apart, but still was good darby dans hasnt let me down yet, so ill be back yet again.

    I love sandwiches! I could eat it every day (well almost every day) Darby Dan's is super close to work and I go there often to eat. Their a little on the pricey side for a sandwich but I don't care. I always get a turkey and american cheese on a soft role w/lettuce, tomatoes, onions and their special garlic mayo. As well as a soda and some chips. The lines are always long but man o many are the girls who make the sandwiches fast!!!

    The stars are actually between 3.5-4. Their sandwiches are certainly above mediocre. Customer service however is a hit or miss, specially the ones making the sandwiches. I wish they would smile more often. Why so serious? You be the judge.

    I'm not one to get technical when it comes to making a sammich. Roast beef with lettuce, tomato, jack cheese, and garlic mayo on Dutch Crunch. Fan-freakin'-tastic, and a good size too. Yet another place that won't break the bank. So, who's this Lucca that you speak of?

    The Sleeper- Bodacious.. ya I said it, BOfrugginDACIOUS. It was a pretty tasty sandwich. I would definately go here again. Its not as busy as Little Lucas, and the service is way better than Subculture.. Its the new to go spot in SSF for sandwiches.

    This place knows how to serve up a yummy sandwich! I only go on Wed, Thurs, or Fri because that's when they have the crab salad and/or shrimp salad sandwich. I usually get the 1/2 and 1/2 on Dutch Crunch. It's one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The crab and shrimp salads are full of crab and shrimp! The dressing they use is light and it's just enough to bind the ingredients. Plus, they put tons of it on the sandwich. It's about $8 and it's enough for two meals. I haven't tried the other sandwiches, but the place is always packed, so I'm sure they're just as good as their seafood sandwich.

    Bread was good, had chicken salad and it was not so good. Tasted like cheap pre-cooked chicken that had terrible texture. Girlfriend didn't get the best service as the lady just made her sandwich without asking her what she wanted in it or what type of bread to put it on.

    I kept hearing about Darby Dan's from a few on my friends and that I have to check it out. At any new sandwich place I'll usually order a crab salad sandwich on dutch crunch as the litmus test. The exprience: * The dutch crunch was subpar from other shops * If you ask them to toast it, they throw it in the microwave. The MICROWAVE!!! That's the worse thing you can do to dutch crunch. * They only gave an average portion of crab salad * The jalapeno spread is actually really good The verdict: * This place can't beat Roxie's sandwiches. Roxies gives more meat and higher quality breads * This also can't compare to Little Lucca's. Again I think Darby Dan's bread supplier is subpar. * Little Lucca's spread is half garlic and jalapeno, while DD's is jalapeno. They're both good and personally I think it's a wash #1 - Roxies #2 - Little Luccas' #3 - Darby Dan's

    Very good sandwich place. Came here a while back my brother and I wanted to try this place out. I ordered the Sleeper and a tuna salad sandwich. Big sandwich and you get what you paid for. I don't think a lot of people know about this place. Thumbs up!

    Five years ago, this would've been a five star joint for me, especially for the grilled NY steak sandwich and the Sleeper. Since I only get exactly 30 minutes for lunch (used to get 38 minutes before being considered late) I don't have time to grab a sandwich and have enough time to eat it. I did come here on a Saturday recently and I was not impressed. Service was slow and the dutch crunch was a wee bit stale. I am taking into account that this is more of a weekday lunch spot, so let's just call it average.

    I've always heard good things about this place. So on our way to visit Dylan, we decided to grab a quick bite. I ordered a liverwurst sandwich but forgot to mention that I want wheat bread. (I've never been a fan of roll breads, since they're so hard.) I expected it to be a liver spread, but instead it was a processed liver roll. I'm sure its really unhealthy, but it was so delicious. They have their special garlic mayo that put a little zing to my sandwich. This place also has a dining area & they provide high chairs. Plus they have a parking lot!

    I'm not a very good writer so I'm just going to write something short and sweet about this place.... I went here because I was craving a good deli sandwich because we didn't get to go to any when we were in NYC. My first choice was to go to Little Lucca's but I guess it's closed on Sundays. So I ended up dragging the hubby to Darby Dan's instead. I got the turkey and provolone on dutch crunch. It was good and a pretty large ( I only ate half) sandwich but I give it 3 stars because I much prefer the dutch crunch at Steve's (in Redwood City)...it was crunchier. And it would've tasted better if it were toasted. Don't get me worng...the garlic and jalapeno spreads were mighty tasty....and I'll probably crave for it every now and then BUT Steve's is still my fave deli spot...with Mr. Pickles coming in 2nd.

    Now this is a sandwich shop. If you happen to be in this area working (which you probably will not be) or if you are heading to the airport and want to bring a pretty solid sandwich (there is better food at SFO) then maybe you can stop by here. They have all the basic sandwiches you expect with the rolls and sliced bread of every other joint. They do have two things though that really make them stand out 1- Kickass crab salad / shrimp salad sandwiches 2- Jalapeno spread for all sandwiches These two things alone are why I'm giving it 4 stars. Something about that jalapeno spread makes me feel good and provides a little extra kick to whatever I end up getting here. I even put it on my egg salad sandwich. They do have some others sandwiches that I know people like Ross M. seems to prefer ...such as "the sleeper"--- ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, jalapeno sauce, garlic mayo, and other veggies on a dutch crunch roll. Seems to be a favorite of just about everyone in line too. Fairly long lines and the ladies that work there are NOT friendly in the slightest. I might even go so far as to call them bitches. Maybe I've found the sandwich Nazis... Don't tell them I said so though I'm pretty sure that they could kick my ass. Morgan approves.

    **Ok, the reviews of the cranky old ladies--spot on! But, I have to say that it adds to the charm of the place, and dealing with swarms of hungry people would get rather tiring so they get 5 stars in my book for being efficient and solid at their sandwich making.... That being said, I had a "Darby Dan" this afternoon and could only power through half of it. It was HUGE and delicious and I loved the jalepenos as they added a little kick to my sandwich. The place is hysterical--a cross between frat boy college bar and NASCAR team racing. But they had parking and plenty of seating for my coworkers and I. A good place for groups, definitely recommend heading out earlier if you can to square a seat and miss the crazed rush of the noon crowd.

    Far from SF but well worth the drive when I'm craving a sandwich.. They make some bomb ass sandwiches! I tried the Sleeper and that is probably the best sandwich to choose from.. It really makes you sleep so make sure you're eating at home on your bed or have time to sleep in your car!! Sleeper (heat it up) has ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, jalapeno sauce, garlic mayo, and other veggies on a dutch crunch roll. They don't skimp on their meats and veggies.. fresh veggies I must say... I love the jalapeno sauce and garlic mayo. The jalapeno gives the sandwich the "special" taste that it has.. Dutch crunch bread is the * of this meal... It has a great CRUNCH and a great taste.. Did I mention that it is HUGE!! It's probably one of the best sandwiches I've had...

THE CORNBEEF sandwich hit the spot. some kind of mustard secret sauce they put in their sandwichs. TRY THIS PLACE you wont regret it.     This place has the best crab salad sandwiches EVER! My cousin offered me a sandwich from this place one time; I didn't know anything about Darby Dan's or where it was, but once I took a bite out of that sandwich, I WAS HOOKED. Ever since that first bite, I've been going back to Darby Dan's to get that famous crab salad sandwich... I think the secret to their bomb ass sandwich is the jalapeno spread. I've had their crab salad sandwich without it and it wasn't that great.... I think that KICK from the spread really makes it delish... The only downer to this sandwich is that its only offered like once or twice a week. Not sure why it's limited, but it is... so when we're passing South San Francisco (we live 35 minutes away), we always call Darby Dan's to see if it's even available... Otherwise, we don't even bother..

    Solid sandwiches. I've mentioned I love love love sandwiches before, right? I'm from the mid-atlantic, land of sandwiches--so again the caveat that these California joints have a different style intrinsically to the east coast sub. But given that, Darby Dan's does a really good job and is totally a viable option for lunch on any given day (at work).

    Not the cult classic that Little Lucca is, but almost as worthy. Sure, it's not run out of a tiny trailer, but it's still in a suitably odd location, nestled among a string of airport hotels alongside the freeway. Few people would find this place, let alone try it, if they weren't looking for it. The interior is actually a sprawling, beige-ified diner, and there's even beers on tap, TVs with sports games, and a grill menu (weekdays only--must be for the business travelers?). I didn't try the famous Sleeper, just their eponymous Darby Dan sandwich. Not quite as ridiculously large or messy as Little Lucca, it instead reminded me a bit of the clean, fresh sandwiches at Estela's. If you have a few minutes to spare before your next flight, or you just landed and you're starving, Darby Dan's makes a convenient and satisfying stop.

    I will give this place another try but Little Lucca is still the best. Maybe it isn't a good idea to eat here at noon on a Sunday because I ordered the Darby Dan on Dutch crunch and the bread was on the stale side. It was hard to bite a piece off and I had to pull the sandwich away to bite off a piece. Not good! I thought the meat here was not as tasty as LL either and I like the garlic sauce in LL since it's more flavorful. The upside about this place though is it's not as soggy as LL. I didn't eat the sandwich until more than an hour after I bought it and it was still pretty dry. Prices are reasonable although not as cheap as LL since for one sandwich here, I was able to eat it all whereas in LL I had to save the other half.

    I have had their sandwiches now about 3 times, the first was the best and they have gone downhill each time. The meat is not very tasty. The bread is good and I love condiments and sauces so the mayo with garlic and jalapenos is the main reason they get 3 stars. The service is HORRIBLE. They are rude, as if you came in just to inconvenience them. They won't do any substitutions or half sandwiches (unless its their special). I think the reason my first sandwich was so good was because it was early on a Sunday and they weren't too busy. Also, if you can choose who makes your sandwich stay away from the older ladies, they are the worst sandwich makers and the rudest of all. Why would you stay at a job if it makes you miserable - it can't pay that well?!

    Started working in the area a few months ago and during my first week my coworkers convinced me that I HAD to try Darby Dan's. I have never been a fan of dutch crunch bread but after hearing the rave reviews about from my friend, I just had to get it and...they were soooo right! Turkey with everything except mustard (I don't want that to cover up the garlic/jalapeno deliciousness!) on dutch crunch is so incredibly tasty! Now my only problem is that I find it next to impossible to order anything else and stray from that awesome sandwich! Crab sandwich I hear good things about...maybe one day.....

    I've been going here since forever. My parents would sometimes bring sandwiches home when I was a kid. They have a wide selection of sandwiches that all taste amazing. They're also pretty big too. I like the Egg/Tuna Salad sandwiches or the Sleeper, which seems to be the favorite. All of the bread they use taste crunchy and fresh and they're never like dank or soggy or shit like that. Really good place over all, but kind of out of the way and in a random area of South City

    I been living in South City for like 6 months was raised in Daly City and have never ate here. The sandwiches are so good here. the CHICKEN SALAD i love and the garlic mayo and JALapeno spread is so good. The bread was so fresh. i have not had anything from the grill yet but i will go back for the sandwiches forsure.

    Always good food but the staff is icy. The prices are high any you must spend 10 bucks to use a credit card. No problem there. Their prices make sure you spend that much for lunch. I only go here when I am working in the area and craving a sandwich, otherwise I try to avoid it. Not what it used to be. The staff treats you like shit, unless you have been a regular for the last 20 years and I think those folks just tolerate it.

    If I could, I would give this place 50 stars! I'm not even a big sandwich fan, but Darby Dan's has the best sandwiches ever! I usually get turkey, avacado and pepperjack...so full of flavor! Love the dutch crunch bread but the garlic mayo and crushed jalepeno spread really make their sandwiches special. We usually make the hour long drive to South SF once a month or so to enjoy these sandwiches!!

    In two days of going there for lunch, I have to say Darby Dan's has amazing sandwiches. Personally I like to get the Piccolo. It's so delicious! Though the prices were a bit shocking at first compared to some other nearby sandwich shops, I can honestly say that the price is worth it. They also have a good assortment of drinks, TV to watch the sports games or whatever's on, and their building in general is very well kept. Very clean. I honestly am a fan now and I recommend trying it out at least once. You won't be disappointed!

    I work at lowes so my coworkers are probably reading this an laughing. Anyways, I especially like the burgers. The sandwiches are above average. Bread is fresh but specific. Food is good. Lots of drinks. Bathroom clean. Nice breeze. Price is decent. Though I'm giving them a 5. there are a few cons. I don't like how they have a rule on credit card being a minimum of $10. I also dont like the kitchen(grill) hours. The hours on the entire shop actually are only meant for lunch time.

    Working all around the bay I find lot's of places for lunch. I worked on a contract at Genentech for almost 7 months and I didn't find this place? What was wrong with me beside the fact that one of our project managers knew about it, went there at least 2 times a week, and kept us in the dark. Bastard I tell you! I was doing another job down the street close to Oyster Point and found it on my phone. I'm not a "Huge" fan of sammich shops because well, a sammich is a sammich and I can make them from home. Plus I am not a huge fan of mayo dripping mustard overwhelming onion breathe sammiches. Yeah I'm a picky sammich man that likes to order my way. And when it comes to ordering my way sometimes it's just easier to get something else than to try and relay to the friendly multi-lingual people behind the counter. (Multi-lingual meaning no speak english much). Enough political incorrectness. Here's about the sammiches. The specialty sammiches are limited but who needs 500 sammiches when they are all the same with 1 difference between each. There are 5 or 6 maybe 7 specialties here then the every day sammich meat of your choice if you want. The Darby Dan you say, why not since it's the name of the place. It's a nice selection of deli meats. In my opinion though, here's where it gets good. The bread is dutch crunch and good too :) The garlic mayo is really good and the best of all available condiments the jalapeño spread. Why would you get a sammich here without it? You don't like spicy, phooey on you. It's basically finally chopped jalapeño's. Sounds simple, is simple but try and find that at Michaels sourdough, or "cringe" subway. I admit, I have a small mouth that's cursed with a jaw that's been broken with TMJ. So this sammich is hard for me to eat. It's large and the bread takes a good strong bite. But that's my issue LOL. The flavor is good with creamy garlic meats cheeses textured bread and then the heat from the jalapeño spread. The other sammiches are ok too but I keep getting the darby dan as it seems to suit me. I haven't even tried the sleepr that everyone talks about because as much as I love bacon I don't really have to have it on my sammich and that's about all that appears to make it special. Ohh well, lunch or a sammich dinner give this place a try if you're around. They have a bar as well with a kitchen but haven't tried anything else. Please avoid the chains like quizno's and substandard subway and go here for sho.

    Convenient, fast and good. Came here for lunch with 2 of my coworkers. The service is friendly and fast. The 3 of us shared 2 sandwiches, the Darby Dan's and the Piccolo. The portions are worth $6.95/sandwich. I have never had Little Lucca's so I don't anything to compare this sandwich place other than Subway and Quizno's. The deli meat is fresh and the jalapeno spread adds an extra element to the sandwich. I like that this place serves beer and offers food items served from the grill for those who aren't in the mood for sandwiches.

    Fab-u-lous! The best place in the area for sandwiches, I recently found them and stop there once a week or more to pick up lunch/dinner for work. My fav is the crab salad on dutch crunch and the Sleeper comes in right after that one! Line can be long, though as others have mentioned moves pretty quickly, though avoid the rush at noon if you can to save time and easier parking. Plenty of seating, loads of chips, drinks and other goodies. Staff can be a little short though if thery were too gabby folks would complain about that..so it is perfect so far!

    The best sandwiches by far in the San Francisco area. The offer a range of hot and cold meals that are more than filling and very tasty. The seafood, crab and shrimp sandwiches are amazing. The stuffed meatball sub is an experience with a hollowed out roll stuffed with meatballs and sauce. Worth a drive and always friendly.

    I went to Darby Dan's due to a recommendation from a friend that used to live in the area. This review is strictly for the Veggie Sandwich [Avocado, Swiss Cheese, Cucumber, Sprouts] with everything. The jalapeno spread is amaaaaazing. I could just imagine sitting there eating it on Dutch Crunch all day. My friend recommended The Sleeper, but since I'm a vegetarian I couldn't order it. I can only imagine that it would be beyond great for meat lovers.

    My favorite sandwich place of all time. The Half & Half ( shrimp/ crab salad) is good, but normally I order the Sleeper ( turkey, ham, bacon, with everything on it). It can get pretty busy during lunch, so call ahead if you can. A few years back, a friend and I saw former SF Giants Manager Dusty Baker picking up an order. "Go Giants" we cheered, he replied with a smile and thumbs up. Coolest sandwich shop experience ever!

If you have a heartier appetite, choose the regular dutch crunch. Bigger portions for the same inexpensive price. I try to fax in my order for pick up to avoid those crazy lunch lines.

    I was really torn between 3 stars or 4 stars. I chose 4 stars based on the food at the hot counter, and the fact that they have beer on tap. Here is a little hint if you have never been to Darby Dans. The restaurant is divided into two sections, hot and cold. You cannot order and pay for a cheeseburger and a cold turkey sandwich from the same place. The guy that runs the hot kitchen area is nice and helpful. I love the BBQ beef sandwich and the French Dip. I have also had the burger, fries, onion rings...it is all really good over at the hot counter. The ladies that run the cold section/deli could not be less friendly. I find them to be quite rude and avoid the deli at all costs. Unfortunately, the hot area is closed on weekends. I heard the Sleeper was a delicious sandwich but was a little disappointed when they put it in the microwave...makes for soggy veggies. I went back for it, and opted for the non-heated version of the Sleeper...the sandwich itself was pretty good, but I'm going to stick with the hot kitchen portion of Darby Dans from now on.

    I've not been to Darby Dan's.....BUT, my co-worker just brought me a sandwich from there. It was tasty goodness fried up in sourdough bread (obviously buttered), cheese, bacon and tomatoes (well, I had to have something "healthy" in there!!) So good...but so bad. So bad I feel like my arteries are clogging up as....I ....type....*keels over* Heh, not really....but this sandwich was definitely worthy of the greasy spoon award. Still, other people ordered deli sandwiches that looked wonderful and could be considered "healthier"....if that's what you're looking for...*ahem*.

    This place, affectionately known to me and my co-workers as "The Double Dizzle" makes a solid sandwich, but I'm not in love with the place. I think this place looks like it was transplanted from Georgia or northern Florida. The women with their beehive hairdos take your order and Beer-sponsored Nascar posters and other such decor adorn the restaurant which is somehow tacked on to "Airport Inn". The bread here is good, the dutch crunch which I can't eat too often is yummy. The meat I find to be just okay. The jalapeno spread makes the sandwich interesting but Little Lucca is much tastier with many more interesting choices. Lucca also has several kinds of turkey and other meats. Onions don't come standard on the sandwich here. Why? But of course you get two kinds of mayo. I really find that avocado adds a big flavor component to an erstwhile "okay" sammie. For that okay sandwich and drink I paid $9.20. The other half of the restaurant is a grill and I have yet to try anything from it, though it could be good. Maybe next time. It is close to the office so it has that going for it. This is a good lunch spot for those who work nearby but I won't go out of my way for it.

    They place does make a decent sandwich, but truly I'm not that impressed. I did have their half and half on a dutch crunch roll today and the roll was good, but the shrimp and crab salads had way too much black pepper on them to be enjoyable. My roommates seemed to enjoy their sandwiches, but it just doesn't work for me. Seems to be overrated in terms of quality of ingredients (their tomatoes are factory-farmed and way under ripe, resulting in a bland, watery slice of veggie matter; their sprouts weren't very crunchy, either). I've experienced an unpleasantly sassy attitude from the sandwich makers, which I know is supposed to be cute and endearing, but really it's just annoying. It's not like at Sam Wo's in Chinatown with the artfully insulting wait staff. Darby Dan's is somewhere I don't have to seek out if I'm in the area.

    Comparing this to Little Lucca I have to give LL the edge. I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. Good thing there is Yelp, I would never have stopped here, even with my "dive" sensibilities. On the plus side: 1. Dutch Crunch roll was perfect. Not too hard, not too soft. 2. Very convenient location right off 101 and on your way to the airport from SF 3. Fast, speedy service on the sandwich. 4. Good jalapeno sauce 5. Nice mix of meats, I liked that there were some "combo" sandwiches here. 6. Open on Sunday when LL is closed. On the negative 1. Sandwiches are smaller than LL, just less value 2. Sauce just can't beat LL's garlic and hot sauce goodness 3. Meat not freshly sliced in front of my eyes 4. No counter service for burgers, etc. on the weekend In the end, it's LL by a nose, but this is a worthy contender, and definitely an option on Sundays or days when driving to ECR is just a bit too much of a hassle.

    This is probably one of the best deli's I've had. I LOVE this place. I really recommend you order the sleeper and get it WARM of course. I always get everything in it, w /out regular mayo, but the garlic mayo is A MUST! That's what makes this place special. I just love their garlic mayo. It adds that perfect kick to the sandwich. It's not overpowering at all. I'm guessing it's roasted, but anyways it's made fresh and tastes soo good. I can never get enough of it! You gotta also have their jalapeno spread too. It's not too hot, but just the right amount of heat to add that quick kick to your sandwich as well. If you love sandwiches, this place is a must check out! The deli of south city, hands down!

    I've been coming to this place since I was a senior highschool when I got my drivers license...and that was in the 80s. I discovered this place by accident when I came down to SSF for heavy metal party at one of the warehouses on a Saturday afternoon. I had beer, I was high and I was hungry. From that point on, it's always been a destination for me. The ownership has changed recently in the past two years, but the new owners are keeping it consistant. Now that I work in the general area, I have a tendency to come here at least once a week. That kinda sez somethng about the place, eh? * Oh, I usually go for the Turkey Club (turkey w/bacon and swiss) or the Darby Dan (basically an Italian Combo with provolone). There's a kitchen as well that offers burgers and huge salads. The meatball sub is a filler-up too. ** and get your sub on the dutch crunch WITH the galic mayo. Don't be all healthy and try to use sliced wheat and no mayo...it's just not the same. ***2/12/08 (update) For some reason, the quality has gone down a bit. It seems like they're using staler bread, the garlic spread just tastes like mayo with garlic powder, and the turkey (which I usually get) has zero flavor. The whole sammy was bland. I thought that maybe they had an "off week", so I went back a week later to see if it were true - yes, still bland. What happend? I don't know, but a South City staple has just gone down hill.

    The sleeper and chicken salad sandwiches are both great toasted or not. Can't go wrong with the Darby Dan as well. Overall taste is great with a home made quality to them. One recommendation I would make about the place is to have some more sides available than your regular potato chips. And shut the windows!!...it's freakin' windy and cold outside LOL.

    I ate here about 2 years ago and had the French dip and thought it was pretty good. I'm not sure if it's that my taste buds have changed since then, or that they changes chefs, but I've been here twice over the past month (July 2008) and have decided I will not be going back. I had the chicken salad sandwich, and was looking forward to deliciously juicy chunks of chicken, and ended up getting cut-up, sliced and salty processed meat. It's just not the same. I thought, well, maybe I just need to eat from the grill, so when I went back I ordered another French Dip to see if it was like I remembered it... and it wasn't. Honestly, the meat had a funky after taste, so I joked with my husband that I really wasn't quite sure what kind of meat I was eating. I'd rather pay more for a sandwich and get better quality. Not sure why the place is so darn packed! As an aside- I recently had to cut wheat from my diet, so I ate these sandwiches without the bread (which is really hard because the bread did look pretty good). I challenge the folks who like the place, though, to eat their sandwiches without the bread and review Darby's based on what's inside... I'm pretty convinced those ratings will drop.

    My first time there and I ate from the Kitchen. I had a Bacon Bleu Cheese burger and it was good except they used bleu chees dressing instead of melting bleu cheese on top of the patty. The meat they used tasted fresh, and the burger overall wasn't overly greasy. I went with my co-workers and they all really liked their food. One had a tuna sandwich from the deli, and another had a turkey burger. They couldn't stop talking about how good it was. I would definately go back there again. Maybe next time I'll try a sandwich from the deli.

    This place deserves 3.5 stars. Darby is clean and service is pretty fast considering how busy they can get during lunch time. In addition to their cold sandwiches, they also serve hot food such as french dip, burgers, hot dogs... etc although I have yet to try it. I've tried all their cold meats and it's good quality and consistent. Nothing extremely spectactular since I've had better yet still more enjoyable than a lot of other comparable deli spots that I've tried. I now stick with their roast beef because they have it just a bit medium-rare, tastes great! However, I had a sandwich today and it seemed they didn't give as much meat as they used to. It's inconsistent since the last time I came here about 1 month ago, they gave me a lot. The standard condiments they offer on a sandwich is mustard, mayo, garlic mayo, jalepeno spread, lettuce and tomatoes. They do have red onions if you like them, just ask for it. The garlic mayo doesn't really have a distinch garlic flavor and the jalepeno spread is not hot at all, kinda reminds me a waterdowned slightly spiced relish. Their choice in cheese is standard such as Monterey Jack, Cheddar, American, Provelone and Swiss. You can also get bacon. I can't remember all the different breads they offer, but I stick with the dutch cruntch... not too hard on the outside which is perfect for me. I do wish they could toast a sandwich but the best they can do is microwave... eck! Throughout the week, they have various items only available on certain days such as shrimp and crab (imitation) salad, eggplant and meatloaf sandwiches

    Been going to Darby Dan's consistently for over 2 years now, and it never seems to disappoint. As far as sub sandwiches go, it's hard to really stand out from all the other sandwich joints out there. Two things that make DD a little different is the dutch crunch bread and the jalapeno spread. The bread has a nice crunchy consistency on the outside, yet nice and soft on the inside. The spread gives just about any sandwich you get a nice kick. On top on that, they also have a grill area in the back which serves up burgers and hot sandwiches. One of my favorites here is the french dip sandwich....one of the best I've ever had. The crab melt is also pretty good, but they only serve it on Tues through Thurs. I believe. In short, a great place to go for a great meal at a reasonable price.

    I love the sandwiches here. I usually get the Turkey Club with everything on it, which includes the absolutely delicious jalapeno relish and garlic mayo. It's a little more expensive than Lucca's and Mr. Pickles, who I also love, but I like Dan's more. I hate that the grill isn't open on the weekends, so I never get to try any of the hot foods. The service isn't so good, the ladies are kind of rude and I sense that they hate their jobs. The price and the service are the reason I'm only giving them 4 stars.

    This place has gone to the pits ever since the new owners took over this place. The sandwiches aren't as good as they used to be. I think they changed their deli meat brand to something, and they got very skimpy on their deli meat. Their chicken salad looks as they used canned chicken, and they don't offer cranberry sauce, which happens to be one of my favorite condiments for chicken salad sandwich. I say skip this place and go to Little luccas in SSF or Julie's in Brisbane.

    I got Jan into this place one day when he was craving a good sandwich shop. He ordered his favorite the corned beef sandwich while i ordered my favorite the roast beef. Their sandwiches are good sizes & their dutch crunch bread & garlic mayo spread is really tasty. For me what makes their sandwiches good is definitely the garlic mayo. I'm not even a huge garlic fan (i know, i know surprising right?) but this was not too garlicky & it goes really well w/their sandwiches. Mm... so good, but then you gotta deal w/the garlic breath so don't expect a kiss from your bf &/or gf right after eating here until you pop a mint or gum. Lol! Anyone looking for a good sandwich shop to try should definitely stop by here one day.

    The half and half on dutch crunch light on the jalapeno spread - to die, or kill for. That's half shrimp salad and half crab salad on the freshest of fresh bread, their special garlic mayo and jalapeno spread. Spicy - yes! Deeeeelicious - YES!! They serve this piece of heave Thursdays and Fridays for sure. Hear they're doing it Wednesdays too, but have not personally had it on a Wed. If you are not into crab or shrimp, the meat selection is endless and they also have a full grill menu. The fries that come with your burger are thick and crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside - just perfect. They also have the half and half salad. Also killer. Packed between 12 and 1, but well worth the wait and you can always fax in your order ahead of time and have it waiting for you. They are really good about this and you can just jump to the front of the line to pay for your order.

    So for lunch today, Srini and I wanted to eat something healthy --- soup and salad (especially when all the drinking I've been doing lately hasn't helped my figure one bit.) Then of course, we opted for a place that served the best hamburgers in South City...what was the point? Not sure. We got to Darby Dan's and both decided to jump for their delish sandwiches. My turkey breast w/ avocado (healthy fat!!) was meaty AND yummy. If it weren't one o'clock in the afternoon on a weekday, I would've forced Srini to play the game I invented: never seeing the bottom of the beer glass. YEAH!     Another great sandwich place in SSF! I've been here a few times. The sandwiches are huge. My husband and I always split a sandwiche and it's filling. I love their dutch crunch bread! I've ordered take out for a meeting from here. They also offer selections other than sandwiches. It was very easy. I ordered and paid over the phone and picked it up. They don't deliver.

    When I used to work in Brisbane, DD's was a regular spot for my co-workers and I. The jalapeno spread and garlic mayo are what makes the sandwiches so irresistible! My favorites are the Darby Dan and Crab. The grill is also really good! I recommend the ortega burger and onion rings. It's true that the ladies behind the counter aren't the friendliest, but they make a damn good sandwich!

    This is my favorite sandwich shop. Don't-mess-with ladies (I love the white lady with the big poofy hair!) will make it, toast it hot if you ask for it and then you try to fit it in your mouth as well as your stomach. Large portions, tvs with sports, sports and more sports, a bar. The customers run the gamut. Dressed up biotech people. Dressed down biotech people. Rugged, season ticket holders for the 49'ers. Craggly alcoholics. Your basic neighborhood meeting place. Mmm....okay, now I'm hungry and I'm going there for lunch....

    SLEEEEEEEEPER! Ok, it might not really make you fall asleep. But this sandwich is pretty damn good. Ask them to toast it, and its alot better. Other than that, great selection of sandwiches and chips and drinks. A little busy during lunch time, and a little on the expensive side for a lunch meal. (around 7-8bucks for a sandwich and chips, and small drink). Definitely go here if you're looking for a sandwich that packs on LOTS of meat.

    Sandwiches are my life, they are my god, they are my everything. How in the name of Shub-Niggurath did i not know Darby Dan's was minutes from my job? I had to get in at least two sannies before reviewing Dan's. Over all the sandwiches are darn good. First of all my sandwiches there have been huge. I say there is definitely enough bang for the buck with these suckers. On my first visit i made the mistake of eating a bag of chips along with my sandwich and needed a stretcher to carry me back to work. The dutch crunch rolls are pretty good for sandwiches. I dislike bread that is too thick, too dense, too crusty. The dutch crunch seems like it might be a bit overbearing at first, but is pretty light and performs well with whatever fixins. The crab salad was falling out of my first sandwich, and i was picking it up out of the grass to get just about every piece. The roast beef was solid, i like mine a little pinker, OK a lot pinker. And the jalepeno spread on anything really makes the grade. There is nothing really too fancy about the sandwiches, no ciabatta, or extravirgin olive and basalmic blah blah blah, just good ole fashion hearty sandwiches. And it feels a bit like a truck stop inside Dan's, as if I've spent much time at truck stops, I don't just like the type of local business that I want to support in the face of corporate sandwich hell. I'm scared of the sleeper, but I think next time I might be up to the challenge. And i'm sure there will be many more next times...

    Went here for lunch this weekend. I ordered the Darby Dan and it came on Dutch Crunch. I loved the bread and the spread is awesome but for some reason it reminded me of the sandwiches I make at home. It really had nothing special about it except for the good bread and nice spread. The lunch came to a little under $10.00 for a sandwich and a Fanta. That seems a bit steep to me. As far as the warming of sandwiches in the microwave goes, that's a definite No No. It makes the bread tough after it's cooled down for a bit. I'll give this place another try though.

    The only reason this place didn't get 5 stars is because of the parking, otherwise everything in this place is great. Burgers, Melts, & Deli Sandwiches are all delicious. The Jalapeno spread on the deli sandwiches are unlike any other deli place; it's just the right amount of spiciness. Darby Dan's is without a doubt my favorite deli spot.

    my boy was talking about this sandwhich place thats pretty good through yelp users. when i got there they had good parking and of course a clean establishment. but honestly... the sandwhich was really not that good. i am talking about the price. i d still rather go to little luccas. the price i paid at darby dans i could of went to little luccas for a bigger portion. ive never been so disappointed. i guess its alright if your in the area and you want a sandwhich. but i wouldnt go outta my way for the place. id rather go to little luccas.

    A great sandwich shop. The rolls are pretty large and stuffed with whatever favorite meats you choose, light on the lettuce and garlic mayo, nice. I try to come at least once a week, and usually order the Darby Dan itself on Dutch Crunch, similar to what a Subway or Togo's would call an Italian. The line snakes at lunch time, and parking is a you-know-what, but with 4 ladies doing what they do best behind the cold sandwich counter, it tends to move along a lot quicker than you'd expect. The Grill line in the back of the shop also offers some nice choices: the beef au jus is quite the looker and I haven't tried the burger choices as of yet...Beers on tap, on last glance, included Widmer and Pale Ale.

    There isn't a whole lot of culinary choice in SSF, so when you find a good place you gotta tell people about it. Darby Dan's is one of those occasions. The sandwiches are very good, my personal favorite being the crab and shrimp sandwich. It's one of their specials that is only served on a certain day. They also have a kitchen that serves fried food/bar fair, if thats more your steeze!

    Ok this place did go down the tubes once the new owners came in the picture. I ordered a roast beef cheddar cheese on dutch crunch. I sat down and I picked up the sandwich and noticed that the portions of meat are very skimpy now. WHERES THE BEEF! I'm sorry I was a big fan of Darby and they will be in my childhood memories, but now I have found my new calling Julie's Deli in Brisbane CA. I have one review on it if you like to check it out. I think its better than Darby's skimpy meat sandwiches and Little Luccas soggy wet mess.

    i gotta say, with all the hype this place gets i'm hugely unimpressed. got the "Darby Dan" sandwich, essentially a classic Italian: ham, mortadella, italian salami, provolone. a basic sandwich like that should be a standard, especially if you're gonna put the restaurant's name on it. it was by no means a terrible experience, but not only unimpressive, pretty poor. the jalapeno spread overpowered any flavor from the bland meat (clearly, had been kept either prepackaged, or frozen), tomatoes and onions were rare, and the major bulk of the sandwich was shredded lettuce filler. if you're in the area and hungry for a sandwich, don't waste your time here. head down east grand 5 minutes and there's Luigi's Palace, or up on El Camino you've got Mr. Pickles and Little Luca's. we're lucky to have so many great sandwich places in the area, but Darby Dan's simply is not one of them.

    Hate to be the wet blanket. Not a big fan. This review is based solely on catered lunches at our office. I find a lot of the meats, like pastrami and ham, to be tough or laden with little rindey pieces. I found the egg salad really bland, and the other salads kinda stinky and oniony. Our office caters lunch twice a week, and Darby Dan days are the days I go out anyway.

    I've been coming here before I could even order a sandwich for myself. They remodeled it a few years ago and made vast improvements over what it looked like before. But the sandwiches remained the same, delicious. Something about these sandwiches make them one of my favorites. The quality of meat and cheese used is very good. I once spoke to the former owner about this and he said they looked for meat distributors every couple of months, then determine which ones offered the best quality meat. If the current distributor didn't continue its standards then they wouldn't be a customer for that distributor. I am not sure if the new owner continues this but the sandwiches still taste good. Hopefully the new owner doesn't mess with the recipe for success that the original owner has. But back to the sandwiches. They put everything on them, but you have to ask for pickles. The rolls are very good and the garlic mayo compliments the sandwich perfectly. I usually get the Darby Dan or the Piccolo, which are both loaded with meat. They do offer hot food during the week but I would stick with the sandwiches unless I want fries or onion rings.

    I've been eating at Darby Dan's for close to 30 years. The sandwiches are great! I love the food. I've referred many of my friends and coworkers here. The 1 star rating is for one reason and one reason only. The Staff. Last Sunday I asked for extra garlic and peppers. I got home and found no garlic and no peppers. Very poor experience. Being that I love these sandwiches so much I returned today. The same girl was making my sandwich so I made it a point to watch her as she made it. This really bothered her. She seemed more interested in carrying on her conversation in Spanish with the other lady that was there. She was so into her conversation that she had to ask me twice what type of sandwich and if it was for here or to go. She was not paying attention to me. Her friend left to speak to a gentleman sitting at the counter. As she finished wrapping my sandwich up I walked over to pay. Once I paid I sat there waiting for my sandwich. I saw the lady that made my sandwich walking over. I thought she might have my sandwich with her but instead she walked on by and proceeded to join her coworker friend and the customer at the counter. She left my sandwich where she made it. She had a very poor attitude and because of that I am writing this review. I saw three lady's working there and there were no other customers ordering food besides me. It was very slow. Why such poor service? The lady that rang me up is OK. she is an older lady that has been there for years. The other lady's spoke Spanish. The one with very poor service was the bigger of the two. I didn't get her name but I think she may have had a piercing. She is the reason I will no longer go to Darby's.

    I read tons and tons of reviews on this place that rave about the sandwiches, the Sleeper in particular. I was a little nervous going here since it was already hyped up. Well, guess what, it was a Slam Dunk. I got the Sleeper and had it heated, and man oh man, was it good. The meats were in the perfect amount, the cheese was good, the veggies were done carefully and the garlic mayo / jalapeno spread were what brought the sandwich over the top. I like my sandwiches meaty and wet (good amount of condiments, esp. mayo). I don't care if it's messy or clean or weird looking, as long as it tastes good, I'm a happy man. Sandwiches are one of my Top 5 meals, and Darby Dan's doesn't disappoint. I went the next day after my 1st time, to make sure, and it was still awesome. Get the Sleeper, Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles and a diet coke. Trust me.

    Sorry, but I won't be having lunch here again. The French roll may have been fresh, but it was way too hard. I ordered the Darby Ham sandwich thinking there would be plenty ham, but I've had more bacon on a BLT. Finally, there's some kind of spicy sauce on the sandwich which was too hot. The side salad was one of the best side salads I've had with many different types of vegtetables. The restaurant was seemingly clean. I should have ordered the Chicken Salad on a Dutch Crunch roll.

    This place rocks... I work in the mid-bay and a friend of mine suggested this place to me for lunch. The sandwiches are absolutely incredible and HUGE!! A little known secret is the grill.. They have awesome turkey burgers and sausages.. Your sandwich friends will be done by the time you get your food but it's worth it.. I recommend going early or late for lunch. It can get pretty crowded at DD although you don't usually have to wait too long.

    When I was in high school, I thought this was the best sandwich place ever!! But now that I'm a bit older, wiser, and more refined this place is not that great. Stopped by this place today since I was doing errands in the neighborhood.....I was disappointed to not have a warm toasted meatloaf sandwich....BTW, microwaves do not count!!!!! What is the point of a meatloaf sandwich if its not warmed in a toaster? I've heard the crab melt (Wed-Fri) is really good but I'm not in that area on the days its available and not sure if its worth a trip for a microwaved sandwich........

    Kind of pricey for a hotlink, but the hotlink is so good and it comes w/ fries. The hotlink is big enough for 2 people or 2 girls. The place is really small though. If you want to bring more than 4 people and dine in, seating might be an issue around rush hour lunch. Parking is cut throat too.

    I've been eating sandwiches here for years. I've tried a variety of them, including the crab, the Sleeper and the Darby Dan, but have now settled for my favorite...turkey with cheddar w/ everything except mustard. You also have to request the red onions. I guess what makes this place different is the jalapeno and garlic mayonnaise spreads...both add flavors to the sandwich. The dutch crunch is also very good, and crunchy compared to some places. Sandwiches are large, if you're not a big eater you can save half for later. They also have a grill section that looks pretty popular but I have not tried this section yet. All I can say is that the food looks good and the tables are always filled during lunch time. The parking lot gets filled-up during the weekday lunch period and there could be a line of people ordering sandwiches. You can call ahead and order but I have heard complaints that they don't get the order right sometimes. I always watch them make my sandwich...thank you for using gloves.

    Great sandwich! You can have it heated, in a microwave, but it just works. My favorite is the Sleeper --- ham, turkey and bacon. Most sandwiches are served on dutch crunch bread. They are also served slathered with garlic mayo, and a jalepeno relish. One bad thing is they do not come with onions, and you have to ask for them, and HOPE the ladies behind the counter remember to put them on! They also have a grill with Philly's, burgers, and such hot sandwiches. I have tried the hot italian sausage, and it was pretty good.

    I had the piccolo. Ham, turkey, roast beef, and cheese. It was a good solid sandwich, and really liked the jalapenjo paste, but I was sad to find they did not have a toaster. I had my sandwich microwaved, but the bread was really hot and the inside of the sandwich was cold so it didn't help. The sandwich was slightly expensive at 6.95 and it was almost 20 bucks for me and my girlfriend to eat and have a snapple.

    Been coming here since 1999. great place for a huge sandwich. i can't believe i used to eat one all by myself. the dutch crunch bread is crunchy, chewy, doughy, prefection. i get the roast beef or the turkey. call me boring. all your usual deli meats, chips, and drinks.     Okay so I've heard about this place a lot from my coworker. She's kind of food obsessed. But since I work in Foster City and they close at 5. I could only try it on a weekend. So I went in today for lunch with Boyfriend. The place was nearly deserted. But everything looked neat and clean. I ordered a turkey sandwich with everything. Boyfriend had the Roast Beef. And omg. That delicious Dutch Crunch alone is worth 3 stars. I've had Dutch crunch before, at Safeway mostly and I have to tell you. It doesn't compare. That bread was amazingly perfect. It was soft but crunchy with just the right amount of bagel-like chewiness while at the same time not being too hard or grating, (I have a cold right now so my throat's all sore and sensitive, but even the bread end didn't irritate my throat). The turkey was good, I just wish there was more of it. My sandwich seemed like it was mostly bread. The garlic spread was tasty but not overpowering. And they didn't put too much mayo or mustard like some places do and all you end up tasting is the sauce. The veggies were veggies. The pickles were good. And Boyfriend said his Roast Beef was medium which is hard to come by apparently. It always ends up being being over cooked and tough he says. I really enjoyed this place and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good tasty sandwich. The bread is just so yummy. I'm definitely going back. I can't wait to try the crab salad.

    Hmm... I'm not such a fan of this place, but it's conveniently located near work so it's a popular option for lunch. For their sandwiches, they use mass-produced bread that comes out of a plastic bag (I know I sound like a food snob, but I really appreciate freshly-baked bread or at least bread that does not contain unnatural preservatives). I do, however, like the fact that they have a veggie sandwich with avocado.

Given the large amount of beer on tap here, I think the only time I won't get hazed by favorite party girl is if I continue to go on Wednesdays at 1pm.     Love this place. The sandwiches are so big...I usually just eat my boyfriend's half. It's pretty crowded during lunch; order ahead of time for pickup is best since they lack seating. The most popular sandwich is the sleeper with dutch crunch bread. I'm pretty sure all sandwiches come with dutch crunch unless you ask for something else. They have a parking lot, but you can also park on the curb.

    Definitely come on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday and get their wonderful crab salad sandwich, if you prefer shrimp, come Thursday and Friday. Not too much mayo and a jalapeño spread w/ a pretty good kick. The restaurant itself is difficult to find and so is parking. Its connected to a hotel and only accessible going one direction on Airport Blvd. The line is normally pretty long, but they do have call ahead ordering. Despite these cons, Darby Dan's is still worth the trouble. Good sized sandwiches and an excellent jalapeño spread. They have a good selection of breads though I stick to my favorite the dutch crunch. Outside of Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, it's hard finding a crab sandwich or better yet a GOOD crab sandwich. This may be better than the one's at the Pier since they make them fresh so the bread's not ice cold from sitting in a fridge. I don't think their sandwiches are quite as big as Bonne Sante, but they have the crab sandwich and that's what keeps me coming back.

    I was really intrigued when a friend highly recommended this place and told me how big and delicious there sandwiches were. So, I ordered the sleeper that I've been hearing a lot about. Let me tell ya, the size wasn't that big and the sandwich tasted really bland. On the menu, it says that they put garlic mayo but I couldn't taste a drop of it. I must admit, it truly does put you to sleep like the name of the sandwich I'll give them that. I tried also their pastrami and pretty much experienced the same results. This was last year when I ate here and also before the new owners took over. But looking at some of the recent reviews, It looks like the latest owners hasn't made this place any better. If you want a big quality deli sandwich, I highly recommend you to Little Lucca's instead.

    I've been looking for an alternative sandwich place near my office since my usual go-to place, Little Luca's on El Camino has an out the door line during lunch times. This place is little more out of the way (at least for me) as compared to LL's convenient location right on El Camino. Parking however is way easier since they've got a long sidewalk for parking as well as a big lot next to the place since it's in the same building as a hotel. LL can be a pain to park at during busy times as there's not much sidewalk parking and their lot is shared and probably full since it's not that big at all. There's also plenty of seating inside, with counters or tables/chairs and they've got more than just sandwiches if you're not in a sandwich kind of mood. LL has outdoor seating, but it's in the back and for foul weather days, it's not really nice to be out there. Price-wise, it's about equivalent to Little Luca's, around 6 bucks or so for a sandwich but their sandwiches while decently sized, aren't the size of a massive brick like Little Luca's sandwiches. Partly because their bread just isn't as big and they don't jampack it with lettuce and sauce like LL (this is a good or bad thing depending on you). On the sauce, it's kind of nice since if you order a default LL sandwich, the thing can get really soggy if left alone for a while. Probably won't happen as easily with these sandwiches. I am however a big fan of the garlic sauce they put on LL sandwiches and was pleasantly surprised when I noticed the pastrami I ordered from Darby Dan's had a similar kick. But again the sizing is not as big as LL. I don't usually even come close to finishing a LL sandwich alone and typically order a small (1 dollar less) which is around the size of a Darby Dan's sandwich. Value-wise I guess that puts LL sandwiches a tickle ahead of these, but only a bit. They've also got similar Dutch Crunch rolls that I find irresistable at Little Lucca but again not as big. The seating, the parking and no massive lines make this a good alternative for those in the area looking for a good sandwich.

    Our Chicago cabbie told us that as soon as we landed at SFO we had to rush over to Darby Dan's and get the crab sandwich! We followed his advice and boy were we glad!     You know, it's an average place. Not super clean inside, not the world's most flavorful or fresh food, but it's decent. Stand up order at the counter, grab a table where you can. It's decidedly old school in presentation. Don't get fooled thinking there are only sandwiches; you can order hot food too. Sadly, it's not made well known. If you're hungry and not looking for a food experience, this place will suffice.

So glad I took his suggestion because this place is just DELICIOUS! Hands down, the best sandwich place I've ever been too so far. I live in Oakland and I don't mind driving all the way to South SF to grab a sandwich from here. I never cared about having to pay for toll to for the bridge because it's that freakin good! There's a lot of available seating here but can get crowded around lunch time (11-12:30). However, the service is very fast so the line moves quickly. Slow down when you think you're near Darby Dan's because it's sort of easy to miss the place. The trees on the street kinda blocks a clear view of the place. Not hard to miss the driveway to turn into. Their sandwiches just have all the right ingredients to put together a HUGE scrumptious sandwich. Dutch crunch bread, mayo, garlic mayo, lettuce, mustard, tomatoes, jalapeno spread, and you choice of lunch meats. I get the works but substitute regular mayo with EXTRA garlic mayo! Also, the jalapeno spread just adds the perfect amount of kick to set your sandwich outta this world. I prefer to stick with the regular lunch meats because I'm iffy about the special like the crab sandwich. Heard good and bad things, but maybe I might just sample it. They have all kinds of chips and drinks to go along with sandwich. With all that said, this place is truly wonderful. You can't go wrong at all. I've been coming here since 2005 and will continue to come here even tho it's out of the way. I usually only eat half the sandwich and be satisfied. I have a whole other half to eat later! WELL WORTH IT!

    I had been going here frequently for a Sandwich at Lunch. But over the past couple years, the Sandwich Counter has become a painful experience. The sandwich makers are getting very unfriendly, never smile anymore, can be just outright rude at times. Hey, I like a good sammich like the next guy. But when I work my patootie off all day, and just want to cool my head for 15 minutes and eat like a man, I don't need some stuck up bee I tee c h with a sharp knife making my food and sporting a major pms attitude. No thank you. And why is it I would be better off speaking in Spanish to place my order so it get's done right? Because I speak Spanish and English fluently, and still cant figure out why either language cant get my stinkin sammich order right! Oh well, there's always KFC down the street.     Working so close to DD, it is often a request from employees to feed at staff meetings as well as the other sandwich joints like Little Lucca, or Milbrae Sandwich (since they deliver). Sandwiches are often perfect for us to feed our hungry employees while also keeping food costs to a minimum. Since I lead the meetings I am also responsible for placing the lunch order. When I can't decide, I flip a coin. And as as the saying goes, you know what you really want by the result you hope to get from the coin. If I toss a coin in the air, heads is Darby Dans and tails is either Little Luccas or Milbrae SS, I sort of hope for the coin to land on heads. My go-to is the Sleeper on sour dough with everything, add avocado. I used to be a big fan of dutch crunch but I find it very stiff/hard at DDs. The sleeper includes ham, turkey, bacon. Everything refers to garlic mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo. Yes, 2 different kinds of mayo on one sandwich. Don't worry, it isn't too much mayo. Other notable sandwiches that are not served everyday: meatloaf and the half and half (crab and shrimp). From the grill side... I have never had a chef's salad quite like this. LOADS of deli meat sliced and rolled and piled onto a bed (california king sized bed) of greens and veggies. It's amazing! They're very good about accommodating large orders... always fully staffed and the lines move fast. Friendliness and obvious hustle of the staff is much appreciated!

    I've tried Little Lucca's, when our office was on Spruce. A year ago we moved to Oyster Point, so it was obvious we had to try Darby Dan's. I'd say me and my co-workers order from DD multiple times a month. For sure once a week, sometimes twice. We are definately dedicated to DD now. 2 of the best sandwich spots in SSF. I am a HUGGGE fan of their Half/Half Combo, half crab, half shrimp on either dutch crunch or sliced soughdough (however mostly dutch crunch or the soft roll) with EVERYTHING on it. At DD when you say 'everything on it' that includes mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, garlic mayonnaise and jalapenos. The crab & shrimp sammies are only available Wed-Thurs-Friday. Their crab melt is to die for!!!! I've even had their Turkey, Cheese and Avacado, which is Yummy, as is their Egg Salad. OMG! I find I can only eat half at lunch, and usually have the other half that night for dinner (I usually make a salad to go with it or a cup of soup). Can't really save it for the next day. It gets too wet/soggy. I just love Darby Dans. Plus they are so friendly. Speedy service too. Their sandwiches are the BOMB.COM. I'm not sure if its the sandwiches or that garlic mayo jalapenos spread!!!! If you haven't tried this place, your missing out!!

    The only reason I came here was because I found an old gift certificate in my glove box for this place. Unlike a lot of people, I'm not a fan of their sandwiches. Why? Something about their hard dutch crunch, fatty bacon, and not a really good garlic spread that makes me wonder how my friends can spend $10 on a plain sandwich here. I mean, this tastes like a sandwich I can put together. And I don't want a sandwich that I can put together. I want a sandwich that someone better than me can put together. I mean, I'm the type of person who can't even cook Rice R Roni correctly.

    I just wasn't a fan of Darby Dan's. The name is fun to say for sure, but I didn't enjoy the food! I've gotta be biased because my hometown is in Jersey where we call sandwiches "subs" and they're quite a different delicious breed. I ordered a wrap with awful turkey breast. It wasn't lean white meat, much poorer in quality. The only nice flavor that saved it was the jalapeno which is a great option. My partner ordered a pastrami with on whole wheat. There was really nothing special about it. While the foodie scene in San Francisco is incredible, someone point me in the direction of where I can get a really good sandwich that doesn't need to be dressed up in fatty fixins' to taste decent.

    I was raised East Coast, and in my lifetime I've had some of the best sandwiches made on our blue planet. Out West, Darby Dan's is without a doubt a place where you can get one of the best. Make sure you don't skip on the homemade jalapeno spread anytime it is offered - fantastic stuff! I used to eat meat, and back in those days The Sleeper was my favorite sandwich of all time. Now that I am veggie only, the hot Grilled Eggplant is,......WHOAH, I'd drive a hundred miles just for one of those, incredible! Pretty much anything on the menu is gonna knock your socks off. The breads are super fresh, as is everything else in-between. It is a very unassuming looking place from the street, easy parking, go in there and you will find a great vibe and great grub.

    This is definitely a great place to get a sandwich. I agree that Darby Dan's has fast service, and their sandwiches are always fresh. Plus, their sandwiches fill you up for a while. You won't have to worry about being hungry after you eat a sandwich from here. The only problem I have with them are that their sandwiches are a little pricey, and you might have to pay around $10 or $11 if you get chips and a drink with it, but overall, it's worth it. For sure, one of the best sandwich shops in the area!

    I hate to do this... but I had a very disappointing sandwich today. Towards 5pm they had sold out of Dutch Crunch rolls and we had to settle for White Rolls, Wheat Rolls or sliced bread. The White rolls were decent and soft, but they are obviously smaller than the Dutch Crunch rolls (same price). Also, I have been noticing this a lot with DD's turkey, it reminded me of lunch meat from a store bought package. It was "fake" turkey and slimy. Once upon a time when I was a kid they would take the turkey breast and freshly slice it for you using the meat slicer machine. Now they just take it from a bin like Subway. I have noticed the quality of the turkey go down over the years. This time was just such a let down after not having a DD sandwich in 4 months. Still love the mayo, but for the price can't they use "fresh" meat?

    I get the Sleeper everytime im here - warmed up!!! Mmmm. Didnt give it 5 stars because the ladies that work here are not very friendly, always seem super annoyed. And they do throw the whole sandwich after they put it all together in the microwave to warm it up which sucks but its still good. A little pricey for the size.

    DD makes 'just okay' sandwiches for a premium price. I ordered a pastrami sandwich on a wheat roll, no cheese--total came out to be around $8. It is a little more expensive than other places, and it's certainly not justified--ingredients are the same, choices are kind of boring, and the taste isn't there. The staff there do look pretty miserable, too. You certainly don't get that 'welcoming' feeling at DD. The owner, though, was polite and very friendly. Would I return again? Nah, it's not worth the time or effort. I can whip up something similar with half the effort and half the price at home.

    I've tried Little Lucca and now I can I've tried South City's other pride and joy, Darby Dan's. It took some time to finally get a chance to try Darby Dan's due to my schedule, but it's safe to say that it was worth the wait. It's easy to compare Darby Dan's to Little Lucca: they're both sandwich shops in South City; they both serve generous portions; and both have been around for decades. The exterior of Darby Dan's is pretty new and includes a private parking lot with plenty of spaces. The first thing I immediately liked about Darby Dan's is the spacious layout. There's plenty of room to place your order, a bar area, and plenty of tables to enjoy your meal. The menu behind the deli counter proudly displays their sandwich selection including some of their legendary sandwiches, such as the Sleeper sammy. I passed on the Sleeper and came for their Half & Half, a crab and shrimp salad combination served on Thursday's and Friday's. Darby Dan's has a steady supply of bread choices and I almost went with a wheat roll before asking what bread is best and my sandwich maker steered me towards the Dutch Crunch. In addition to the crab and shrimp, the sandwich included mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, garlic mayo, and a jalapeno spread. I opted out of the mayo and added avocado for a surcharge of $1.25. The sandwich was a more than reasonable $8.95 with a bag of chips costing an additional $1.09 and a fountain drink costing $1.80. As I was handed my sandwich basket, the seafood sammy looked nothing short of amazing. It was well put together and wasn't overly massive in size and wasn't falling apart. The Dutch Crunch was visibly better than other sandwich shops and wasn't overly thick. I headed for one of their tables and began to dig in to my Half & Half. The first thing I noticed: the crab/shrimp salad wasn't overly mayo. The garlic mayo and jalapeno spread were a perfect counter balance and gave it a nice kick. The Dutch Crunch? Hands down much better than the competition. Crunch without being overly thick and bland. Towards the end my sandwich was dripping crab/shrimp salad into my basket, which I thoroughly enjoyed with my baked chips. Add a bit of their table side Tabasco and you have one amazing sandwich. The only way I see their sandwiches getting any better is by pairing them with one of their cold beers. Also, I should mention that I went on a Thursday one hour before closing and they still had the crab/shrimp sandwich available. After trying the same sandwich at Little Lucca, I can confidently say I'd take Darby Dan's over Little Lucca, but a little sandwich rivalry never hurt anyone.     I like sandwiches...but I loved this one! After reading good recommendations from so many others, I decided I really needed to try Darby Dan's--and it certainly met the high expectations I had from all those reviews! The Sleeper on Dutch Crunch was scrumptious. And they have multiple kinds of Fresca (yeah, I know that's a drink for old people, but I love the Black Cherry Citrus kind). The sandwiches are expertly prepared with all the ingredients piled neatly between the slices of delicious Dutch Crunch bread. The staff were friendly and quick. I will be visiting this area for several more days and you can bet I'll be back here before I leave (and next time I visit the area)!

    Best. Sandwich. Around. My co workers and I eat here multiple times a month. Quick service, great sandwiches. I love the sleeper on soft roll. You can order it hot too. That mixed with a voodoo chip. One of the best lunches. Sandwiches are a good size and keep well for a day in the fridge if you can't finish.     It's good, but do they not toast the breads? I felt like my sandwich would've been so much better if it was hot. I had a pastrami and my brother had a darby dan. We had half of each others. It was also very messy, so I was happy I ate it there. Compared to other places, this place puts a lot less meat. They also have a nice selection of drinks. Some I've never even heard of. All in all, I would go back if I was in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get another sandwich.

    Possibly the best deli shop I've ever been to! I ordered the house namesake Darby Dan. with everything on it. The Dutch crunch bread added a nice texture. I didn't realize that everything on it included jalapeno spread. I don't normally like spicy food but this is very very tasty. Had to pause a couple times. I'd order it again.     One of my coworkers always brings our office crab sandwiches from Darby Dan's and despite the slightly soggy bread upon arrival, it's still sooo delicious! Definitely get it on the Dutch Crunch bread. The sandwich is neatly assembled, the ingredients are fresh, and the crab salad isn't drowning in mayo. Have napkins on hand though, things can get messy fast. Price wise it's also not bad considering the portion size. Note: the crab salad, as well as their half crab/half shrimp salad, sandwiches are available on Thursdays & Fridays only.

    Despite their special house made garlic and jalapeno spreads, the sandwich tasted boring, dry, and too salty. Also, huge point deductions for not having toasted sandwiches - note: they offered to microwave it, but I opted not to because she planned to microwave the lettuce and tomatoes too. Biggest sandwich pet peeve. Ever. $8.40 for the Sleeper (their most famous sandwich), is a pretty good value and easily sharable between 2 people; however, with so many better options (Sandwich Spot, Marina Subs, Bite Me, Munchboxx even... and tons of options in Burlingame) I doubt I will return. The pro is that you don't have to wait 1 hour for a sandwich like you do at Little Lucca.

    Talk about scrumptious burgers! The burgers were loaded with all kinds of goodies, including cole slaw. Get your napkins ready because these burgers are juicy! Excellent service too. We were able to get in there and out quickly before going to the airport so it's a good place to keep in mind instead of eating at the airport.

    The restaurant is at the bottom floor of a Ramada hotel, with a blue sign large but at ground level. And with the street being tree lined and the traffic here fast, it's easy to miss. The sandwiches here aren't bad, but they're nothing special either, taste just like what one might make at home. I had the Piccolo, without mustard or jalapenos (if the sign said that the jalapeno was a spread, I would've gotten it). You can taste the mayo, the tomato, the lettuce, like a real nice blt, but with ham, roast beef, and turkey. you get the point. The magic that was suppose to make this different from a sandwich at home was probably the garlic mayo, which I probably should've asked for double instead of half mayo and half garlic-yo. The garlic note was rather light by itself, and I couldn't taste it at all when I ate it as a whole sandwich. Again, I had skipped the jalapeno spread because I had assume it'd be whole jalapeno slices. Little Lucca's and Mike-n-Ken's both have a better sauce and both and Roxie's toast their sub, Roxie's being the ace on this part. And with similar prices, I don't see a point coming back soon.

    If ToGo's, Little Lucca's, and a generic neighborhood Bob's Burgers had a baby, Darby Dan's would be born. I'm just a fan of dutch crunch and egg salad whenever I get a chance to order a deli sandwich, but I'm biased because of Fredy's Ocean Beach deli. Crazy busy with suits around the 12pm-3pm buzz...obviously. I like that there's a parking lot. Major negative points because there are 2 separate registers...One for your deli sandwich, and then if you're friend wants to order a burger or something, there's one register for the grill but you have to walk to the other side of the shop to pay for it...I don't like when things don't make sense.

    I'll add to the slew of reviews of this place. This place is totally legit. The food is delicious. I used to work across the 101 from this place in 2006-2007. I would come here twice a week, and my waist showed it :) On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays you can get the dungeness crab sandwich - get it on the dutch crunch bread. They're huge, so bring your appetite or plan on taking some home.

    This place is a great spot for lunch if your looking for something to eat around South San Francisco. I go there about once a week and my favorite sandwich is the Crab Salad which is available only Wed-Fri. If your a fan, and tried Crab Salad, you must try it here. I love their Jalapeno spread. Basically its crushed jalapenos which looks like relish. Much better than the actually jalapeno pieces other sandwich shops just toss in because you won't have to worry about the jalapenos falling out of your sandwich here when you take a bite. I also love their Garlic Mayo Spread. It gives the sandwich that extra kick and it's very tasteful. The bread is always fresh there also. The only downside of this place is that you should try to avoid coming here on peak lunch hours ( 12pm - 1pm ). There's lines out the door. I also like to try to avoid the parking lot because it's a little small and I've already seen a few douche bag's hit other peoples car and just take off. You got plenty of street parking there and you vehicle won't get door checked...

    Meatloaf sandwich a MUST. It's not served everyday, but I think on Tuesdays and sometimes on Wednesday if they have leftovers to serve. The service here is much quicker than at Little Lucca in SSF. I go here when I have the urge for a nice big sandwich and an affordable price. You can end up spending $9-$10 with chips and drink. They do not slather a lot of toppings on your sandwich and you can definitely make them the way you want them to. Great service and very quick eats.

    This is a very popular spot during lunchtime, especially with all the biotech companies nearby. The line can get out the door! But there are a lot of workers making sandwiches, so it moves pretty quickly. When I first came here, I got the Sleeper sandwich, which consists of 3 types of meat (ham, turkey, bacon), cheese, veggies, and the garlic mayo sauce that everybody loves. It's a very heavy-tasting sandwich. The meat isn't the highest quality, but it's decent. The dutch crunch bread is good. I usually get the turkey club now, which has everything like the Sleeper except ham. I personally think the Sleeper is too heavy... If you eat both halves of the sandwich, it is a food coma for sure! :( You should split a sandwich with someone. I prefer Little Lucca's or Ike's over this, but this is nice because it's closeby to my work.

    1/4 ways through my first Darby Dan's sandwich (turkey w/ avocado and bacon) and have to pause (grudgingly) to write a review. I've worked in the area for 4 years, driven past umpteen times and never, ever noticed this place. Felt like a sandwich for lunch today and searched Yelp for someplace new. If you're not looking for it, you're likely not going to find this place just by driving by. The parking lot has ample space, the restaurant is larger than I had expected (there is a sandwich section in front and a grill section in back) and very clean. The service is fast and friendly. The sandwich: hard to wax poetic over a sandwich, but it has to starts with the almighty bread. Here, it's really good! The crunch roll is perfect balance of soft interior, nice crunch on the outside, and salty with a touch of sweet. The ingredients are fresh, flavorful and abundant - they don't skimp. I had them go easy on the garlic mayo and jalapeno sauce. Although it was $10+ for a sandwich, chips and soda, it's a HUGE sandwich - 2 meals for sure. Perfection!

    This place was amazing! My co-workers and I where going to the DeYoung Museum and where starving. So we all meet up here, he use to work around here, he was the bus driver for the 49rs' . So he takes us here and it was amazing, we arrived here around 1 and we just missed the first wave of people who had their lunch at 12 and the second wave was on their way. I ordered "The Sleeper" with everything on it. it was the best sub i had in a while! it had ham, turkey, Cheese ( i think Monterrey) bacon, on a dutch crunch roll! It had some spicy garlic mustard mayo combo thingy, that was out of this world. He ordered the crab sandwich, which i wanted to try but was super stuffed and he probably would of said get your own! ha ha ha I need another excuse to come back here and try the rest of their menu!

    I've been on a sandwich spree lately. I tried this place recently and had the veggie sandwich with turkey. It was mmmm mmmm good. I split my sandwich with my friend who had the shrimp salad sandwich. The shrimp salad had a bit of a kick to it. I wasn't sure if it was the shrimp or the spicy mayo mix but it was pretty tasty. As we were leaving the joint we saw a bunch of construction dudes eating there...so you know they have hearty sandwiches. There isn't a ton of seating so if you go during prime-time (m-f lunch hour) you may not find a table.

Well actually Los Angeles is lacking anything awesome like the Bay Area. So based on my pining and soulful longing for good Bay Area foods Darby Dan's sleeper and garlic and jalapeno mayo and especially dutch mother effing crunch bread.     YUM!!! Okay the only reason I gave this place a 4/5 is because I was never so hard to explain I wanted a plain, grilled chicken sandwich. They have a separate station which has salads, chicken, meat, burgers, etc. from where they make the sandwiches, and the woman taking my order just did not understand what I was talking about when I said I just want a grilled piece of chicken made into a sandwich. Other then the 5 minutes it took to explain and order, it came out perfect and I loved EVERY bite!!! Would definitely go back.

    I just love the messy Darby Dan's special sandwich. We came on a Saturday at around 1. The line was short, probably waited for ten minutes. And yes, the jalapeno spread is spicy, but so good! I almost finish the whole sandwich... that's how good it was. Of course the garlic spread at Little Lucca is still number one.

    Been going here forever, and it's still the best, and only the best, baby! I know that they're famous for their crab sandwiches and sleepers, but anything as simple as a turkey sandwich with their garlic mayo is THEEE bomb! I must also add that as a person who refuses to eat whole pickled jalapeno slices, the crushed ones in a spread form helps and is one of the best things in life. I usually make it in here at the right time and avoid lunch crunch crowds, but I'm pretty certain they get a huge crowd during the top of lunch hour. Their dutch crunch is just the freakin' icing on the cake to make your sandwich that much better. Prices may be low or high, depending on what your financial cohorts are, but it's still hella reasonable. They do delivery, and if I'm not mistaken, their kitchen is closed on weekends which means no hot food. I wish this place had more parking, or an easier way of getting to, but it's worth every mile to get there. It's a nice lil swanky looking place, but they keep the place pretty clean. You can't go wrong with a super large sandwich to go and eat around oyster point, or to watch a game, have a cold one, and see neon signs ;)

    I haven't found a place that makes a better deli sandwich than Darby Dan's. I wish I could recreate this deliciousness at home. Firstly, their Dutch Crunch is a pretty big size. I hate when I go to other joints, and I get stressed hoping to not get the dinky piece of bread. But you never have to worry about this at Darby Dan's! They are also very generous with the amount of deli meat they put in your sandwich. I usually alternate between the Sleeper (Turkey and Ham and Bacon) and the Turkey Club (Sleeper sans the ham). I can't even begin to describe their garlic/jalapeno spread. It is so delicious. And not too heavy! Just right. The staff is so friendly and efficient. I just graduated college and am tempted to apply to Genentech if just to be across the way from Darby Dan's. I envy everyone who works there!

    Our department at work had a lunch meeting and we ordered in Darby Dan's Sandwiches. I got the Half/Half - crab salad and shrimp salad on dutch crunch with lettuce and tomato. I opted out of getting the garlic mayo and other sauces just because it might not have tasted good with all that seafood and mayo. The dutch crunch bread is the same as the one used by Little Luccas - no difference there. All in all I'd have to say the sandwiches were just ok. Maybe I ordered the wrong item. The shrimp in my shrimp salad were miniscule and the crab in my crab salad was fake. I really detest imitation crab - it just doesn't taste right nor does it have the right texture. But I guess what I supposed to expect for $7.95?

I should've gone to Little Lucca - they don't have the same variety here... There's no grilled chicken or wheat roll and that's what I wanted. I'm going with your rating, Brian.     Yeah, South City is pretty much sandwich mecca. I haven't been to Little Lucas, but heard good things. Bogy's Hofbrau makes a pretty legit pastrami sandwich. But my go to place is Darby Dan's. Nothing really fancy schmancy, but they do take pride in the sandwiches they make. Ordering may be a little intimidating at first, but once you figure the rythm of the line its pretty easy. I've had the cold cut sandwiches and the occassional hot ones (they also do a full grill...burgers, sausages, etc). Lately I've been having the half and half (crab / shrimp) on a soft roll. Pretty good. What I like about this place is that its in some random motel and the collection of the old folks who meet on the regular to talk about football.

    I THOUGHT I WASN'T A FAN because the last time I had a Darby Dan sandwich was probably over 5 years ago and it had SO much mayo (even after I scraped off most of it) that my stomach turned. I felt queasy after that. I swore off of Darby Dan sandwiches since..... Fast forward to October 3, 2007 and WHOAH, I ordered the exact same sandwich, a roast beef that's EASY on the mayo, lettuce, tomato, garlic, onions on a dutch crunch roll. The dutch crunch was crunchy (not too crunchy where my teeth will fall off) and fresh, just the way I like it! Boy I scarfed that thing down so fast cuz it was soooooooo good! (Actually, i scarfed down half of it, I can't wait to eat the rest for dinner!) I'm a converted fan! 4 stars for now, we'll see if they are consistent enough to earn a 5th star.

    I actually came here to compare it to Little Lucca since a friend also raved about Darby Dan's saying it was comparable to Little Lucca. Service was sub-par, the lady wasn't very friendly at the cash register. The location was a little tucked away, easy to miss it. The driveway had a big dip so i scraped my car on it, and it's not lowered at all. The sandwich was a decent size but not for the price. it's a further drive so I wouldn't come here as long as Little Lucca still lives on.

    This place is worth 4 stars and I haven't even tried the sleeper yet. I'm a picky eater and the sandwich ladies haven't messed up my order yet. Since I'm an anti-vegetarian its hard to have a satisfying sandwich, but this gets me there with the fresh bread, garlic mayo and huge helping of meat and cheese. Im just happy that there's another lunch place in ssf.

    I LOOOOVE crab salad, so I decided to try it here as they claim to have the World Famous Crab Sandwich. Waste of $7. Had I known it was gonna look and taste like that, I wouldn't even have paid $3 for it. It tasted more like coleslaw...or just plain ol' pepper! Even pre-packaged sandwiches are better than this. I don't know how their other sandwiches are, but NEVER try their crab sandwich. I will, however give them 5 stars for having a clean place and ALOT of seating...and parking! Go to Little Lucca for the best sandwiches!

    Two of my friends brag about this spot all the time, so I decided to journey on over there with one of them yesterday. Now, I'm not a huge meat eater, and normally do not eat pig or cow, but ... how can you go to a deli and not have either? So, I decided on italian salami. I asked that they add sprouts and cucumbers (charged extra), because I like to load up on veggies. The sandwiches are huge, and the condiments include a unique jalapeno spread and garlic mayonnaise. Since I'm not a mayonnaise fan, I opted out, but did try the jalapeno spread--spicy and yum. Looking forward to returning and trying the pastrami--I know, I know, it's beef ...

However, on our way to the airshow in SF my friend said "WE MUST GET A SANDWICH FROM DARBY DAN'S" I'm thinking why are we getting off on this sketch looking street for a sandwich? She said they are famous for their Hot Pastrami... The sandwich was huge, so my friend and I decide to share one. All I can say is HOLY COW!!! they put garlic mayo & jalapeno relish... It was so good I wish I got a whole one... It was so good I woke this AM thinking about it... It is so good I'm willing to drive to there from Milpitas just to get a sandwich fix... Now, I only get 1 hr lunch, so I gotta some how fly up 101N and get back... Hmmmm... could I do this? We shall find out! My girlfriend said she's been going there for many years...     Wow! The crab sandwich on dutch crunch is amazing. I've worked in South San Francisco for years and years and had never heard of the place until Wednesday, when my coworkers ridiculed me for not knowing about Darby Dan's. I took immediate corrective action, and by Thursday, I fell in love with the place. There are four or five sandwich making stations with nice ladies who quickly make sandwiches. I saw someone come out with a burger from the charbroiling station and it looked amazing. They have Stella, which I didn't have since I was working, but this little hole in the wall looking establishment totally reminded me of good po'boy shops in New Orleans. I'll be back, Darby Dan's, maybe even on a weekend (which is crazy - I don't like to go near work on the weekends) when I can enjoy a Stella with an awesome sandwich.

    I don't get it. Packaged meats and stale bread.... wait, never mind, I do get it it, it's a big sandwich and they have jalapeno spread... but these sandwiches are NOT fantastic by any stretch. The food from the grill isn't much better. The service is terrible. The hype is ridiculous. It's just a short ride to a bigger, better, but not really that great of a sandwich at Little Lucca. Want to try a GREAT deli? Go to Leonardo's in Millbrae.

    I have been going to this place since I was 8 years old, which means I've called this my favorite sandwich shop for the last 16 years. I am a diehard Darby Dan's fan and will always think it is better than Little Lucca's. My favorites are "the sleeper" and "darby dan." You cannot, absolutely cannot beat the dutch crunch rolls or the jalapeno spread this place has. I don't care what anyone says, it's crack in the form of a delicious sandwich. I know they changed owners and I haven't been here too much since I moved to LA, but everytime I come back up to The Bay, this sandwich is a must have. Do not come here if you don't like everything on your sandwich. I had a friend come with me, it was her first time and she ordered an eggplant sandwich on wheat and I will never let her live it down.

    I love staff, Eedie is the gramma with love. I used to work in the area and now miss it more than ever. I have had everything on the menu. I love the fresh made soups, melts, and chicken. The bar seating, no hard drinks only a few beers, was great. I would be traveling and alone so watching some sports and eating at a bar was the plan. I first tried BJ's but why support them when I could come here for a family style group with better food, better service and people who care. The cookies were bad, but all the rest was great!! My favorites was the tuna melt with soup. Chicken with avocado from the kitchen. The cold sandwiches are good too.

    There's no reason this place should be as good as it is. It's a smallish deli, not exactly outstanding in its location, and their ingredients are at first glance nothing extraordinary... but the final product is surprisingly excellent fare. I think what pushes these sandwiches into a must-have category is the one-two punch of a garlic mayo and a jalapeño relish; these help make what would otherwise be an ordinary sandwich something worth Yelping about. The two sandwiches I recommend are the Sleeper and the Piccolo. The sleeper is touted as "world famous", and I can believe that... a savory combination of ham, turkey, and bacon on Dutch crunch bread, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and the aforementioned mayo/relish combo. The sandwich is HUGE for $7, enough for a big lunch for one or a decent meal for two delicate eaters. The Piccolo trades out the bacon for roast beef, which adds a heavier, meatier flavor, also accompanied by the produce and the mayo and relish duo. I usually order one of each -- one to eat there, and the other to eat later that day at home. Sandwiches to be eaten on the premises can be heated; sandwiches ordered to go should really be eaten cold or care should be taken with the produce, as the lettuce and tomato do not take to heating well. Also listed as "world famous" is their crab salad sandwich, available Fri-Sun. This was a little too sweet for me, though not bad -- I had a half and half, which is half crab salad and half shrimp salad (either combined in two layers across the entire sandwich, or kept separate on either side. If you want to be able to discern between the two, it's best to keep 'em separated.) All in all, it's definitely the combination of all the ingredients that makes these sandwiches spectacular. The last time we stopped by they were out of Dutch crunch so we had our sandwiches on sliced sourdough, and while still tasty it just wasn't the same; likewise the one time I shared a sandwich without the jalapeño relish it just seemed like another run-of-the mill deli offering.

    Darby Dan's used to be pretty good. Since there was an ownership change a couple years ago, it is just not the same. They don't use the original Dutch Crunch bread and what they do use really sucks, it cuts up the roof of your mouth. Last time I went for a sandwich the meat was cut real thick and there was maybe four slices......it sucked. If I ever go back, it will be for the hot food as the sandwiches just aren't the same. I wish they would get the original dutch crunch back. It's too bad cause Darby's used to be the s--t.

    I love sandwiches, so I jumped at the opportunity to try one from Darby's, even though I've lived only 10 minutes away from here most of my life. Although it was a Saturday, they had signs up reading "Crab and Shrimp salads today," something they sell only during the week. We were hoping to score a crab salad sandwich, but they already ran out at 2pmish. Darn it. So my mom and I settled for the shrimp salad sandwich on a soft roll with all the fixin's except mustard. We grabbed two bags of Dirty chips, a drink, paid for our meal and got out all in less than 10 minutes. That's quick service! I was happy to taste that their garlic mayo didn't overpower the flavor of the shrimp salad. The shrimp salad was full of baby shrimp and herbs, giving the sandwich a unique and delicious taste. However, my mind is still set on the crab salad, so I have to go back!

    The sandwiches are great but the service at the counter is very slow. This has happened more than once do I'm mentioning it. There doesn't seem to be anyone working the counter where there are seats. I finally had to go order at the cash register and when I did find the help at the counter and asked for water she gave me an empty cup and told me the water was on the other end of the store.     It's located in an odd place with a little parking lot. Use to live and work by here over 8 yrs ago, so eating here was convenient... Now we return whenever we are in the need for some great local sandwich shop. I like their roast beef on dutch crunch. I love their garlic mayo spread, jalapeño relish.     I am a sandwich connoisseur and a snob. I went here based on the recommendation of a friend. She tells me that the garlic mayo is to die for. I am sorry, but it was not good. After approaching the counter I told them I was there for the first time. The lady looked at me like I had two heads. "What do you recommend," I asked? "It is there on the board," was the reply. Whatever, it thought. I ordered the Darby Dan with everything minus regular mayo and have the garlic mayo. There was no pickle or jalapeño like the sign stated it would. There was so much garlic mayo, which tasted like regular mayo, the sandwich would not stay together. Each bite made the sandwich fillings slide out the bottom. Service was quick. The price was $10 after chip and vitamin water. What did I learn today? I no longer take food recommendations from my friend that sent me here. NEXT!

    Not too shabby, in short. A sandwich shack, that provided me with a reasonable Italian style sandwich. They used a kind of jalapeno spread in lieu of actual peppers, but they had an option for a soft roll in addition to the de rigeur sourdough. I tend to like Togo's, but since there isn't one near work, Darby Dan provided a good alternative. And you can get beer, which brings it to 3.5 stars.

    This place is awesome for lunch! Started working near there again and thoroughly enjoy their sandwiches. I always get the crab sandwich which is stuffed with so much yumminess inside. I used to get it with sliced sourdough but have changed my bread choice to Dutch crunch so the bread doesn't get broken due to all the crab inside.     Definitely a hidden gem in SSF. My newfound favorite place for deli sandwiches. I'm honestly not one to crave for deli sandwiches, but this has definitely put a change to it. This place is really close to work so I'm able to go here when I've got the urge for a sandwich. When I went I got a Half/half sandwich on a Dutch crunch roll. It was really awesome! The half/half salad sandwich is half crab salad and half shrimp salad. Super fresh and delicious. The sandwich is huge too. Definitely one you can have for at least two meals. Another time I got a turkey sandwich on Dutch crunch, of course, with avocado and their standard fixings. Their spicy garlic mayo is on point! Another good sandwich that did not disappoint. The only thing I didn't like about it is that the half/half sandwich is only offered on Thursdays and Fridays! such a bummer, but I guess it's worth the wait throughout the week. Give it a try if you're in the area or have a massive craving for deli sandwiches!

    I really did like this sandwich location. I hate to compare it to Little Lucca but I think that their dutch crunch bread is so much better. I liked their garlic mayonnaise which really complemented the rest of the sandwich. I got the sleeper which was with turkey, bacon and ham. All of it was a good amount and it didn't feel too messy at all (which is sometimes the case with Little Lucca sandwiches). I'd definitely return again to try their other sandwiches!

    The meat, the bread and the ingredients taste fresh. There's always plenty of sandwich makers behind the counter so if youre in a rush, then they will get you in & out quickly. Also they're located just yards off Hwy 101. So getting to them and back on the road is easy. They also have a plenty parking spots. I mention all these attributes since I have very little time for lunch and they're easy to visit if you need a quick and lunch that's great quality. With location, fast service and great sandwiches, Darby Dan's is where I go when I'm passing through town. Try the sandwich called "The Sleeper". You won't be dissapointed.

    This place is so awesome! I used to go here almost everyday for lunch and then I got a new job in the city. I still go here from time to time. This place has a grill on one side and sandwiches on the other. They're sandwiches are good but particularly my boyfriend and I like their grill. My boyfriend loves their Tuna Melt and like their Cheeseburger and Double Dog sandwich.

    I have gone here for probably 15 years since I worked in Brisbane. I love their sandwiches as they fill it up and are a large size that when it is cut in half, I split it and have the other half later. My favorite is the crab sandwiches with jalapenos. I love this with dutch crunch bread. The prices have raised a $1 since I started to go here but still worth it! I just wish I could copy this and make it at home.     Tried the sleeper and turkey breast sandwiches on Dutch crunch. Sandwiches were mediocre. The bread was rock hard and not crunchy at all. More like chewy. I had to peel off the top of the bread in order to eat the sandwich since it was so chewy. The sleeper was definitely more flavorful than the turkey, but a little too salty. The turkey was a little plain and nothing too exciting. Staff was not very friendly either. Prices are a bit high considering the amount of meat. The bread makes the sandwiches look larger than they really are. Would not go back or recommend this place. To those who compared this place to Little Luccas, this place does not even come close. Even a sandwich at Safeway or any chain like Togos tastes better.

    So my first time in this place... I came hearing about it so many times and its close to work just never got the time to stop in. So I walk in and everyone's really nice I order the sleeper on dutch. The price is about average for sandwiches nowadays and for the size too. The sammy can get a little messy so have napkins ready but overall still a pretty good sammy. I'll def be coming back to try some of thier other Sammy and maybe some stuff from the grill too.

    They microwave a sandwich to "toast it" the result is obviously terrible. (I recommend they buy a $30 toaster for peat sake) They need more instruction than socially acceptable to build a sandwich. (Don't ask me four plus times what I want on my sandwich while I keep replying "everything, but onions") tomatoes, lettuce, mayo...?Yes. Worst yet they give you less meat then a Subway sandwich. Worst small local place I've been to in a while. Avoid this place unless your looking for a beer, even then you will have to explain to the owner's wife that they do indeed have IPA on tap. They only have four beers on tap and I guess remembering the wide selection of four beers is a bit much to ask of the owners wife. So if you do come in for a pint, remember to point to the beer you want, and never mind those pesky names. Cheers!

    I'm not a big fan of Dutch Crunch but the rolls here are really good. We went here on a weekend and it was pretty slow which was nice for us because we got our sandwiches in no time. I got their combo which was really good. The sandwiches are a good size too so you'll most likely have leftovers unless you are really hungry. Great sandwich spot outside of the city but I do agree that Little Lucca's takes the cake.

    South San Francisco is such a small city. Finding this deli in the downtown area is easy. The deli is located right across the street from Lowe's Hardware and the city's Cal Train station. But from the outside, this place does not look anything like a deli. Inside, this place looks more like a diner or sports bar with a huge flat-screen TV. Which means that there are plenty of seating for us to enjoy our meal. Behind the counter, the nice and entertaining lady preparing good tasting sandwich for many years. And the cashier is a Japanese avid golf-enthusiast. From the menu located right behind the menu, I ordered one of the deli's popular sandwiches: 'The Sleeper" (creepy name, huh?). For $6.95, I get slices of ham; turkey, melted Swiss cheese, strips of bacon, lettuce, tomato, garlic mayo, and a spicy Jalapeno spread sauce in a toasted Dutch Crunch. The special spread and mayo made a huge difference with all the other ingredients combine to form a good and tasty sandwich. Many of my yelpers know my silly behavior and being a bit goofy from time to time. But the lady enjoys my unique character. For that I may try the other sandwiches on a future visit.

    I've been to Darby Dans a number of times and usually order a hot piccolo, with extra garlic mayonnaise. With chips and a soda the total is about $11. I've also tried their shrimp sandwich, shrimp/crab sandwich, sleeper (a toasted sandwich), and the original Darby Dans sandwich. They are all pretty good, but their seafood sandwiches are not exceptional. Coming here, I learned that if you're trying to order a sandwich, it's best to order in a certain way such as, "I'll have a hot piccolo on dutch crunch, everything on it, with extra garlic mayonnaise." It's just better to say it in a way where they can follow your order by starting from the beginning. But that's just me. During lunch hours it can get very busy inside and outside the restaurant. If you're trying to find parking they have a fair sized parking lot, but I tend to park on the side street. To sum it up, Darby Dans has become one of my go to places for big, meaty sandwiches at a fair price.

    Craving so bad. (An aside: I do have a bit of a bias to this place and as a result, haven't written a review for yearsss though I wanted to. Though the bias may seem unfair, as of course I would give this place five stars, if you want to talk bias, let us discuss how yelp is inherently a biased system in the first place as it is not nearly as reflective of the population as it would seem. See, learned something in grad school after all.) I've had pretty much everything on the menu here, aside from some stuff in the kitchen. I will speak for the quality of everything. While I do eat other sandwiches when I'm in other cities, and while I will say those other sandwiches are deliciously different in their own right, I think I only crave these sandwiches. I do like having extra jalapeno and extra garlic mayo. I'm not a big fan of only tasting the meat of the sandwiches-- in which case, I would ask why you would even want bread on it if the meat to bread ratio is so small that you can't even taste the other components of the sandwich. I like how everything's portioned here and these sandwiches are actually quite big for me. I'll usually eat one half and save the other half for later. My favorite's probably the crab (on rye, I just discovered, is an excellent combination) or the sleeper, when I feel indulgent. Next time I'm in the Bay, definitely going to get me some of that. As for the kitchen, my favorite's probably the thing you can dip in the au jus (forget what it's called). I can eat that all day. All the soups are delicious (particularly love the meatball), save for the clam chowder, which we all acknowledge is ho hum. And did I mention that they're made from scratch? Though the ladies behind the counter may seem kinda terse or unfriendly (and I can tell you that I totally don't get that vibe at all-- have had extensive conversations with the lady behind the register and she's really sweet), I think it speaks more to a generation that's used to being coddled and told that they're the sweetest little things in the world. I usually don't care too much about whether they're smiling or making me feel like the best customer-- just gimme my food, lunch is going to make me happy anyway.

    This is the first time I've been to Darby Dan's & it may be my last. I stopped in to try it out because we had a power outage in our neighborhood. I ordered two sandwiches to go with chips & drinks, that cost just under 20 bucks. What I got was two breadwiches with just 4 slices of meat; the rest was bread, about a 1/2" inch on both sides. The dutch crunch was a bit dry, but I expected on a Sunday. It wasn't very flavorful; in fact, it was pretty boring. I expected a lot more for my money & I was disappointed. Sorry, Darby, I'll stick with Subway,

    Dutch crunch bread!!! This place is usually pretty busy because their sandwiches are so damn delicious--if you call ahead, they'll have your order ready in about 15 minutes. My favorite is the Darby Dan. The "Sleeper" is good also if you're a bacon fan. Mouthfuls of flavor!!! Their sandwiches are huge so I usually eat half and eat the other half later. Parking: lot is tiny, but street parking is not too terrible.

    Dutch crunch, no kidding. My jaw is still recovering from trying to clamp down on this dense, hard roll of bread. Aside from all of your teeth eventually falling off, what a great deal for one of the best crab roll sandwiches around. 7 bucks gets you a generous portion of sweetly sauced, fresh crab chunks nestled in between two slabs of stones disguised as bread. Its worth it though. If they threw this into a blender, and pureed it into a crab sandwich shake, I would have no problem drinking it and asking for more.

    We've been going to Darby Dan's for years. The only problem is, when you eat there, it gets soooooo hot inside. They need air conditioning! People are miserable eating in such a hot restaurant. Air circulation is very poor. The ceiling fans are not enough. Also, to Yelper, Chi L.. The restaurant is NOT on the bottom floor of the Ramada hotel. The Ramada is next door.

    When I was thinking about the profile question, last meal on earth ---the crab sandwich from this place came to mind. I have been coming here for years. Initially my dad brought us home sandwiches on his way home from work. We would always fight over who got what. Years later I moved to SF and would always stop here on my drive down the peninsula. My favorite by far is the crab sandwich on dutch crunch bread, with jalapeno spread, and extra peperoncinis. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Ohhhhhhhhhhh so good. The bread is fresh and tasty, the crab meat is stuffed in the sandwich! Yummmmmmm The place looks like its inside of a hotel, on the side of airport BLVD, in the middle of nowhere, but its well worth the drive. Typically I take the sandwich to go and have at home, or in the park. Man I miss this place. Note: you can only get crab on certain days and it often runs out, I believe its Wed-Friday, but I'd check on the site.

    I love this place! My coworkers have been eating at this place for the longest time and not too long ago, I decided to try it myself! My favorite is the piccolo sandwich on soft roll. I have tried the dutch crunch and realized that I don't like my bread crunchy, so I stick to soft rolls. I have not tried any other sandwiches yet because everytime I come here, I would always order the piccolo! Reason why it lost one star: When you state you want everything, it only consist of mayo (or garlic mayo), mustard, lettuce, and tomatoes. They don't add any pickles or onions unless you specifically say so. I shouldn't have to say, "I want everything and please add pickles and onions." When I say "everything", just put everything!

    Food: I got the Darby Dan sandwich. The mordatella and salami were thick cut - which I'm not a big fan of. I prefer thinner slices. The garlic mayo tasted great. The dutch bread - it tasted good, but the sandwich was so big that the crunchy top of it scraped up the roof of my mouth. The bread was a little bit too thick and chewy for my taste. You need good solid teeth for it and I was afraid my teeth would fall out trying to bite off the bread. Since the bread is thick, the meat is thick, overall it was just hard to eat and the meat kept moving every time I bit into it. It still tasted good though. I look forward to eating another sandwich from them - maybe I'll get the crab one tomorrow. They have both 12 oz cans and 16oz bottles of coke products, in additional to fountain drinks. how nice. Service: It was easy to place a phone order, much better than the lady at Little Lucca. The sandwich was ready within the 15 minutes it took me to drive there. Atmosphere: Very casual, diner like. Good for lunch. Has a counter with bar stools as well as individual tables. The drinks are self-serve from their fridges with glass doors, and the chips are also self-serve under their sandwich counter. Good system.

    YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM ! My mouth is watering for another sandwich from this hole-in-the-wall place. When you look at this place from the street, it looks like it's another office building. They have their own parking lot. It's really bare outside, it wasn't busy when I stopped over. Inside wasn't impressive either. Definitely looked like a cheap eatery where you instantly think of cheap food and dirty tables. There were some tables there that customers left their garbage on and none of the workers bothered to clean it up the whole time I was there. My own table was filled with crumbs. They definitely need to have someone clean the tables once in awhile cause the table with the garbage was still there the entire time I was there. Some guy came by and cleaned some stuff up but didn't seem to notice the garbage on that one table. There were 3 Spanish ladies making the sandwich's, not very welcoming but hey, I came for the sandwich. I ordered their crab salad sandwich with their dutch crunch. ($7.25). ONLY AVAILABLE WED-FRIDAY'S. All of their sandwich's has: mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, garlic mayo and jalapenos. I got mine with everything but the jalapenos. Their dutch crunch is DELICIOUS, not too hard and not too soft, it was hard to get my mouth on my sandwich because it was so big (haha) but seriously, the sandwich is huge and they definitely put a ton of that crab salad in it! I wanted to stop eating it because I was getting full, but it was just TOO good I couldn't stop. Add a little bit of tapatio sauce and BAM, a whole nother level! Oh man, just so good and I was a bit upset that I finished it :( Definitely worth the price, they give you more than what you pay for and that's always a good thing. I really wish they had a combo deal: a sandwich, chips and a drink. :( They have a great selection of chips, btw. If you don't mind cleaning up your own table, wait for your sandwich in silence because the worker isn't talking to you, love getting more than what you pay for, and love delicious crab sandwich's, THEN you should come here. I love it. I need to come back here ASAP. :)

    Stopped by here on my our way to Ocean Beach. We shared two sandwiches amongst 4 of us (which was the right amount). The veggie sandwich was solid. It's the dutch crunch bread and the spicy mayo really makes it. They add avo, cukes and sprouts which I feel puts it above some of the other mainstream veggie deli sandwiches. All of their ingredients are fresh. Will be our go to place in South City.

    I just finished my half of "The Sleeper" (split it with a coworker) and man was it delicious! Okay, it could be because it was on a dutch crunch roll, smothered in mayo (regular and garlic), stuffed with a delectable combo of lunch meats, and topped off with a piece of melted cheese, but regardless, it was GOOD. When you have all the right ingredients, it's easy to make a tasty sandwich. It wasn't something so unique I would absolutely HAVE to go to Darby Dan's for the ultimate sandwich, but they do know what they're doing over there. I'm not used to eating heavy lunch, so with all that mayo, I'm feeling kinda greasy and sluggish, so next time maybe I'll skip the mayo and just get mustard. Other than that, I wouldn't mind going back in the future! EDIT: Oh yeah, now that I remember it, I expected the Dutch Crunch roll to be a little sweeter than it was, so that was slightly disappointing...

    I can eat sandwiches for any meal, however, I have only tired a few places around the bay area. Darby Dans is my new go to sandwich shop. I ordered the Chicken salad, roast beef, crab salad and the Darby dan. Each sandwich is fairly large and could easily feed two if needed. I was fortunate to try each and I have to say they all tasted fantastic. As others have mentioned, the dutch crunch and garlic mayo are an awesome combination. There are some sandwich shops that have a few sandwiches that they specialize in,,it seems that Darby Dan excels at all of them. Lets talk price, because these are also very reasonable. Are these $5 sandwiches, like subway? No and no. The price ranges from $6-$8, but these are a steal for the quality that you get.(a $8 crab salad sandwich....awesome). Highly recommended

    Darby Dan's has good sandwiches. Doesn't quite have the heft of a Little Lucca's sandwich. In my unscientific comparison (sleeper sandwich vs. 20 oz bottle of Sobe) the sleeper came up short; a Little Lucca sandwich will handle itself well against said bottle. The Dutch Crunch at Darby Dan's is not quite as good it is at other places nearby (Little Luccas, Roma Delicatessen, Grand Leader) . All in all, it's not a bad sandwich, but it's more bread-y than it is meaty. I will say: that japaleno mayo they have is pretty tasty. It gets quite busy at lunch. Oh and if you get your sandwich hot vs. cold, it will be micro waved.

    I've had betterrr??!! Get it? Liar Liar. No, anyone? Anyways, sandwiches here are pretty good. I think that I like my dutch crunch sandwiches non toasted. I think what Darvey Dan's really needs is some special sauce of some kind like another spot that I'm not gonna mention. I've ordered the sleeper and the piccolo which were not half bad. The meats are as fresh as it can get and you can tell the bread was delivered in the morning. The prices are reasonable and the spot is pretty big. They have T.V's and you can order a beer so it can be a cool spot to watch the Niners dominate while the sleeper puts you down (Get it?? Instead of you putting it down, the sandwich puts you down, no?? ahhh alright I give up). The location is pretty out of the way for me at least and I've gotten lost trying to get here for some odd reason. They have a small parking lot which is convenient but it does get pretty packed during rush hour. The staff is friendly and it's truly a mom and pop which I really like. I'd recommend it.

    2nd best thing next to Little Luccas. I come here on my lunch break at work because its close by, quick and good. Only bad thing is that their sandwiches got smaller. They used to be comparable to Little Luccas but now it's kind of overpriced for it's size. I'll still come back though because its enough to fill me up haha. Service is okay. They can be a bit slow when customers are picky with their sandwiches. Overall, its above average.     5 stars for the sandwich. 1 star for the rude bitch behind the counter. I went here with a co worker while we were in the area. This place looks a little run down, but he swore that the sandwiches were awesome. We get in, and I instantly feel unwelcomed, as the old ladies from behind the counter just glare at us like we just don't belong there. Anyway, I ordered the sleeper which by the way the "special offer" price of $6.95 is actually the regular price.... not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. So, when I order, the lady asks me everything on it... to which I ask what everything was. She just points at the sign at the end of the deli case. I looked said yup ill take it. When I got to the register, the other lady was turned around, talking to the lady that made my sandwich, and didn't even look at me while ringing me up. I had my debit card on the table, she took it, swiped it and put it back down without even telling me my total! Wow... now I'm pissed and am swearing that ill never return. Then I eat my sandwich and it was wonderful.....so much so that I was willing the retract my previous statement about never coming back. Everything just melted in my mouth and really was fantastic. I really hope the staff lightens up to customers, because this is a good lunch spot.

    A five star rating remains strong. I have to say that the service received today was far beyond my expectations. I was having a meeting today and I knew it was going to run thru lunch so I wrote down all the orders and faxed them in. I planed to pick them up at about 11:30am well around 11:00am, I received a call that the Meatloaf was not going to be ready until 12:30. Which meant that lunch could be delayed but it was no problem at all. I just had people order something else and called them back. Without any trouble I just gave her the changes over the phone and in the time it took me to get there everything was right on time. The food quality was great and the sandwiches were a big hit. Even the hot food was still hot when I got back to the office. My only complaint: I wish they delivered but so close to the office pick up was not a problem.

    My coworkers are I used to come here all the time. They have great sandwiches. What's unfortunate is that the last time we went, one of us found a fingernail, a dirty one at that, in his meatloaf. This is gross and unacceptable. He was so embarrassed since he fished it out of his mouth he didn't say anything for a couple of weeks. Now none of us go. Fingernail aside, their sandwiches are quite yummy. I recommend the roast beef and well, before that happened, another favorite was the meatloaf. It's just that none of us want to go back there again after that incident.

    I think a sandwich is good here only if it's toasted. I tried the Sleeper, toasted, and the Piccolo, untoasted. Both were meaty sandwiches, on dutch crunch but the dutch crunch with the Piccolo sandwich was a bit dry and scraped the roof of my mouth. Perhaps a different bread would have been better but the dutch crunch was really good with the toasted Sleeper. The toasted Sleeper held all of the warmed meats and the melted cheese together and toasting the bread warmed the roll and just soften it. Be sure that you tell your sandwich maker what cheese you would like and if you'd like your sandwich toasted because they might not ask. There are plenty of different chips options offered here and bottled fruit drinks as well. I also saw a bar/grill on the other end of the shop. There's also plenty of seating since most customers take their food to-go. Overall, Darby Dan's is a good place to get a good ol' average sandwich.

    I'm not going to take Darby Dan's down a notch because their sandwiches aren't as super sized as Little Lucca's. There are a few great things about Darby Dan's that I particularly enjoyed: more indoor seating with a counter area, a vastly bigger menu that includes a separate grill menu where one can order made-to-order burgers, The day that I went to Dan's, it was 20 minutes before closing on a Sunday. The owner lady who was still there told me she's going to make sure that I was outta there by 4! I thought she was kidding....now I'm not so sure! Anyways, I ordered the meatloaf sandwich on dutch crust and even though one of my friends swears on the meatloaf sandwich, I didn't find it super amazing. It was a tasty sandwich but probably wasn't what I usually would have ordered. For now, I'll put this rating for the meatloaf sandwich alone but looking forward to coming back here to try the meatball sandwich from the grill or the Sleeper.     I actually discovered this place through Yelp (duh!) when I was trying to find some sandwich places near me. I didn't wanna go to Roxies even though it's closer to me but this was the next closest sandwich spot (sorta). First time I came here I got the crab salad sandwich which was pretty nommy. The sandwich wasn't as big as the one at Little Lucca though. I came here recently since my boyfriend wanted to get a sandwich from here and I got the italian salami. I think that's gonna be my usual from now on since they don't have a BLTA. Anyways, the old white ladies that work here cannot hear. The lady making my sandwich couldn't hear me and the cashier just gave me a blank look when I told her what sandwich I got. I suggest going to the Mexican ladies. One good thing about this place is that there's never a line and they do have a good selection of chips.

    People keep comparing this place to Little Luccas, and I get it.... but to be honest, Lucca's beats Darby Dan's in almost all categories. DD's would take the win for: better selection of chips, shorter lines, bigger menu, better seating. Notice that none of the wins are in reference to the actual food? Don't get me wrong- it's not terrible food. But on a day that I really wanted a yummy, large, italian-style sandwich.... this did not fill the craving. Let's start with the pros: the selection is there, so you can absolutely play with the combinations and get a sandwich that you will like. The chips selection is wonderful! BUT.... the house special sauce is a garlic mayo (I'm not a big fan of mayo, but I do like sauces to prevent my sandwich from being too dry.... so i opted for light on the garlic mayo and extra mustard). They also don't pile up the sandwich very high with veggies. The dutch crunch lacks crunch- though it will barely scratch the roof of your mouth, what's dutch crunch without the crunch? The portion is small, but the price is higher than at Lucca's. The line may be shorter, but the wait is certainly longer for the production of your sandwich. I just wasn't impressed at all with the place.

    This place is a total dump. If you don't want to be sick for a week than I suggest you do not eat the garbage they try to pass off as food. For starters the ladies that make the sandwiches are rude and nasty. You are better off buying a sandwich at a gas station instead of this dump. The place smells like sewage. It is very dirty inside. The tables and chairs are all sticky, I don't think the animals that run this place have any shame at all.

    Another one of those "how have I not reviewed this place before" spots. DD is a definite go to for folks that work in the area, and I am no exception. The trick folks, at least those of you with somewhere to be - is to call and order ahead. Then you don't have to worry about the lack of seating and insanity, though parking will still be a beast, not much to do about that. I've tried a bit over everything here - sandwiches, grill items, salads; nothing disappoints. It's all solid deli food.

    Stopped by again about a month ago, and it was the same goodness as I've always known from Darby Dans over the past 15+ years. I tried this local place called The Sandwich Spot, and while their sandwiches were decent, all it did was remind me of how much I missed Darby Dan's Garlic Mayo and Jalapeno spread. Hands down my favorite sandwich shop, and I worked quite a bit of construction throughout the greater bay area, nothing I've gone to stands out as much as Darby Dans. I usually get a Roast Beef and Salami combo with sprouts and onions, no lettuce, no tomato, extra garlic mayo and extra jalapeno spread... best ever. The sleeper is also really good and they can knock you out like you took valium. I will be going there again today, driving from Mtn View to S.SF just to buy 3 sandwiches. One for now, one for tomorrow, the other for the freezer. (And yes, these sandwiches do freeze pretty well, in case you need to hoard a few extra bites.) BTW, there are a lot of little reasons why you can knock a star or two off their rating for being too busy, too small a parking area, sometimes rude staff, etc... but the sandwiches are amazing and speak for themselves. Oh, and if you read a lot of the reviews, some people want their hand held and need to be complimented by the staff or they'll cry and go home and cut themselves. Think of this place like Soup Nazi and you'll be in heaven.

    Unfortunately I can't give them less than one star. Went there today since I was in SSF. My first time there AND THE LAST!!!!! Walked up to the cashier and politely asked if I had to go to the other side of the counter to order something from the grill since the left side is all cold sandwiches. This was at 2:45pm. The rude ass bitch snaps "Kitchen closes at 3 wadda you want!!" I told her what I wanted and again the rude ass bitch snaps "No soup left!" then looks away to another customer. That was enough for me. Not only will I never go there again but if I'm driving and someone wants to stop there I'll drive 10 miles out of my way to avoid this place. Darby Dan's- because of your rude ass bitch cashier you've lost a customer for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'll let everyone I know to stay away.

    Came here with a co-worker the other day. He said it was recommended by a friend so we went to try it out. I guess I was expecting a great sandwich. It wasn't entirely bad, but it definitely wasn't what I would consider great either. I ordered the chicken salad on sourdough. one slice of bread was kind of hard, the other was okay. The sandwich was a little on the dry side. My co-worker had the egg salad, and he finished the whole thing and didn't comment on it, so it must have been fine. the guy at the register was super friendly, but the sandwich maker was a bit slow. Overall, nothing to brag about, but we did get two sandwiches, chips and soft drinks for under $20.

    If you want an alternative to subway or need a quick fix for a sandwich then sure, why not. Otherwise i don't think it's anything special. If i had the choice i would go to Lucca's for their sandwiches instead. Derby Dan, Piccolo and sleeper are my regular choice of sandwiches there. I had shrimp sandwich there once and it was an epic fail. I don't think I will ever order that again. I was taken by a surprise when I was charged extra for heating up the sandwich. I was like really, who charges extra for heating up a sandwich? Other than that the ladies working there are pleasant and the owner is really nice as well. Mar A. previously summed it up the best: "Lucca's beats Darby Dan's in almost all categories. DD's would take the win for: better selection of chips, shorter lines, bigger menu, better seating." Again, it's decent for a quick fix but definitely not a spot i would consider going on a regular basis. It's "meh, i had better."

We came here for lunch and boy did I regret having that cupcake before coming here. Wayne and I shared the Crab Salad and the Piccolo (Roast Beef, Ham, Turkey and Cheese on toasted dutch bread) Their sandwiches are ginormous! A average person cannot finish an entire sandwich without getting food coma @__@ [W] First time I came here was with my buddy. It was close to his work and he recommended getting some subs here for lunch. I gotta say, this place is pretty damn good and they have a really good selection of subs. My favorite has to be the chicken salad, crab salad or hot pastrami. Second would be their Piccolo and Sleeper subs. If you don't want a sub.....then you can walk to the other end of the counter and order their hot foods. They all come prepared with breakfast meals as well as burgers, fries, salads...the whole bit. Darby Dan's definitely got all their tracks covered. The ladies that work here are very nice as well. There's one lady who always slabs on a lot of meat on the subs but I'm not going to give her away. You'll just have to come here and try it yourself. The subs are big, meaty, and tasty. One of these bad boys should definitely get you full. I can say I eat a lot and those subs are definitely enough for me!

    I just came back from Darby Dan's and I got to say, I was pretty pleased! I ordered the Piccolo Sandwich on a soft roll with no mayonnaise, and I was really content with it. even though I still think there are better sandwiches in SF. It's made up of ham, turkey, roast beef, and cheese. It came out to around $8-9. The staff was friendly to me when I was ordering. There was enough tables for seating and there was also a counter too! I may have come on a not-so-busy time though! I'd come again to try their Crab Sandwich!

    Solid sandwich place that offers big sandwiches at decent prices. Their garlic mayo is tasty and the dutch crunch is always fresh. First time I got the Darby Dan and thought it was a good sub. Today I got the pastrami and was asked hot or cold. I was taking it to go, but ordered it hot. The lady finished my sandwich and wrapped it then forgot to put the lettuce and tomatoes so she had to get it back, open it and fix it. Then she threw the entire thing in the microwave to heat it up. I'm not sure if this is how they always warm up sandwiches, but I hate nuked vegetables on my sandwich! The meat is decent quality, but not the best. Plenty of seating. French Fries looked good.

    After all the delicious mommy made sandwiches from Frank's Deli (RIP), it's hard for me to get excited about sandwiches. I ate them every day for 5+ years. I was so tired of roast beef, brisket beef, pastrami, turkey, corned beef, or salami on rye, sourdough, wheat or french rolls, I started trading for PB&J or meatloaf. Maybe that's good since I could've been a much chubbier kid. Nowadays, I can appreciate sandwiches again for being hearty and fast meals but I rarely go out of my way for one. However, based on recommendations from Hamburglar and his lady, I knew I had to try Darby Dan's. They said the Dutch crunch and the garlic spread were the best things ever. Now, I hate mayo but I thought mayo masked in garlic might work for me. I was right. I was able to avoid the crazy lines I'd read about by going early one day on my way to work. I got the roast beef on Dutch crunch with everything and it was huge and delicious. Next time I will ask for extra jalapenos and less mayo but the bread to meat and veggie ratio was good and for about $6, on par in price but much preferable in taste to Subway or Togo's. Now, onto Little Lucca's to compare...

    I used to come all the time for lunch when I worked in South SF. I fantasize about opening one of these in the East Bay. They are sandwich mad geniuses with a few of admissible flaws. Just about every sandwich from the cold counter is constructed such that during consumption the sandwich turns into a slip and slide. With enough skill during shoving into your face you can compensate to keep it together. Both the cold and hot sandwiches here are outstanding. The French Dip, Sleeper and Piccolo are my tops, though I haven't been able to get a French Dip in a while because the kitchen (hot sandwiches) is closed on the weekends (boo). They're also massive, so I usually eat half and take the other half to go.

    You get what you pay for! Darby Dan's offers a great variety of sandwich both cold and hot! All time favorites there are the Sleeper, Crab and the Hot Italian Sausage sandwiches. Burgers are good too but these with the pepper spread are absolutely killer! Portions are large and very tasty! If you're a small eater than you can share of plan to take the other half home. This place can get packed at lunch so seating can be limited. The prices are a bit more but the good thing is you also get more! Whenever I'm in the area, I try to stop in for one of my three favorites! Try it...you'll like it!

    I went there for lunch today around 1:30 and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect and I haven't done too much exploring in South San Francisco. I walked in and went straight to the counter to order my food. They had a fairly large selection of both hot and cold items. All of the items seemed pretty decently priced. I ordered the tuna melt, paid the friendly cashier and grabbed a table. I only waited about 10 minutes before my food came out. The sandwich was grilled to perfection, the fries were hot and fresh. I hate going to places that use old oil for fries. You can totally taste it. This place wasn't like that at all. I was able to get my food, sit down and enjoy a nice full lunch in less than 40 minutes. I'm glad I found this place and see myself coming here again.

    I have to say that the sandwhiches are good....when they're not falling apart and when they get your order right. We called in an order for 2 sandwhiches and when I got back to the office, realized mine was made wrong. Very frustrating since this isn't the first time. They really need to take more time to make sure they have your order correct. We even went there after the lunch rush around 2pm so they were not busy! There are just to many good delis close by like Subculture and Lucca's to waste your money to not get what you ordered and paid for. Step it up Darby's! You used to be so good!

    When I can get Roxie's, Little Lucca, and Ike's so easily - it's no wonder it's taken so long for me to finally try a Darby Dan's sandwich! I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't disappointed or surprised. It's tasty, well at least the garlic mayo is. The roast beef had hints of bacon in the background, the dutch crutch was really tough and wellll... that's all there is to it - and there's not much else to say!

    Our office made a large order for 11 people. Darby Dans took care of us. When we got back to our office we noticed an order missing. We go back, and Darby Dans accomodates us in record time! Turns out the missing sandwich was missplaced in our office and no one knew! Although we made a knuckle head mistake on our end Darby Dans was not only accomodating and understanding but so pleasent.     Anyone else remember that old TV show, "Alice?" Specifically, Flo...the big haired, sassy, in-your-face waitress? Well, I'm pretty sure she's retired and running Darby Dan's! All kidding aside - I love this sammy joint. I can always tell when a joint is serving up really good food by how long the lines are at lunch! This place is packed with old-timers, hard-working blue collars and biotech geeks. They all come together to share their common love of a delicious deli sandwich and an even better price! The line is long, but it goes fast, thanks to the efficiently staffed gals behind the counter. "Flo" is back there directing traffic and even making your sandwiches. Make sure you know what you want when you get up there or you might get a little sas ;) LOVE the sleeper - I love it so much that I fail to try anything else on the menu! I did try the shrimp and crab combo, which was awesome...but still love the sleeper. This place is def on my top 5 favorite sammy spots in the Bay!!

    I've grown up on Roxie's all my life... But Darby Dans shocked me when I had my very first sandwich last summer. When it comes to a nice sandwich, its all about the bread first then the cold cut. DD has both! I thought a cold sandwich can never compete with Roxie's hot subs but DD has proven me wrong. Most of the time you get nice fresh crunchy dutch crunch bread with not the highest quality meat, but pretty damn good meat. I like that they have TV's, grill, beer and tables to sit at but best of all theres always parking available. Some of the things I hate about DD is sometimes the quality of the food is inconsistent, no outdoor seating and it is CASH ONLY unless you spend more then $10 (as of 12/2010). Overall DD isn't Roxie's but they are a damn good sandwich shop that blows Little Luca's away, and is priced moderately between Roxie's and Luca's. One last thing, the Jalapeño/Garlic mayo is AWESOME!

    I honestly prefer Little Lucca's sandwiches over Darby's. Don't get me wrong, Darby Dan's is very generous when it comes to the meat; but, they don't give you an option of bread--I guess they just assume that you want Dutch Crunch. Their sandwiches are pricier than Little Lucca's. I came here wanting to try the Crab Sandwiches, but, I was disappointed to find out that they only serve them on Wednesdays and Fridays.     I am obsessed with the Sleeper sandwich from here! If Darby Dan's was by my work I swear to you I would eat here everyday of the week. It comes with turkey, ham, bacon, cheese and 'everything' (everything being garlic mayo, mayo, mustard (none for me though!), jalapenos (extra please!), tomatoes and lettuce on Dutch Crunch - it is amazing! Watch out though, I had a hard time seeing the place. Drove by it twice so lookout for the sign. (Maybe it's just me though...)

    Pretty good sandwiches. No they are not Little Lucca size, but still pretty good here. It does get heavy foot traffic during certain hours of the day so I reccommend calling in to pick up to avoid the wait. I love the jalapeno garlic spread from little lucca's but sometimes I just don't want my sandwich overwhelmed and soaked by it. So if that's what you are craving come on down here and have a taste. They have more than sandwiches, it's like a mini diner inside. So if you are not feeling for a sandwich you have other options that can satisfy you.

    Okay this review is LONG over due. I've been going here since high school which was well over 10 years ago. They are still as good today as they were then. There's this one lady who works there that I recognize from back then.. not sure if shes affiliated with the owner, but I must say shes been working there for a long time. All their sandwiches are excellent. From their Sleeper to their Crab sandwich, to just asking for a pastramini with cheese. The sandwiches are big, for me any way, so I can barely eat half. This place accepts card, parking is so so but can be congested during lunch hour. They also offer other things on their menu, like soups, burgers, etc.

    What can I say, Darby Dan's has some of the best sandwiches in the area! Whether you're looking for a cold sandwich or a hot and warm sandwich, they have it all! Top all of that off with a cold drink from the fridge and a nice salty bag of chips, and you have yourself a satisfying lunch meal. My personal favorites are the Sleeper, the Crab Salad, and the Meatloaf sandwich. All of their ingredients are fresh and the dutch crunch bread is excellent. The garlic mayo spread complements the dutch crunch bread quite well. The sandwiches are actually quite big, so don't feel ashamed if you can only finish half of your sandwich. You can always pack the other half for later! There is also a small parking lot for Darby Dan's customers, or you can park on the street as well.

    I've been coming here for years. I used to go their before Giant games when they played at Candlestick, when heading to the airport, or just wanting a great deli sandwich. Prices are low, though that's not a big deal to me but I've never had a bad sandwich here. It's been remodeled over the years and it seems ownership has changed as well, but the food is still very good and reasonable. They've kept the old recipes and specialty sandwiches. As several folks mentioned, my two favorites are either the Crab sandwich on Dutch Crunch or the Roast Beef and Jack on Dutch Crunch, toasted and make sure you get the jalapeno spread, it makes all the difference. And they have a load of toppings that go onto the sandwich, or that you can add. Love the fact their bread is fresh. The Sleeper and Chicken Salad sandwiches are also winners. And they take to-go orders which is what I normally do so it's ready when i get there. Only downer, they are closed on Sundays. And I've never had a problem with parking.

    I, too, drove over here after waiting in line at Little Lucca's. Their line was going out the door at 3 pm and I didn't feel like waiting at the time. I'd never been to Darby Dan's before but I can easily see how it is a neighborhood favorite. They have a bar area with sports on the tube and a lot of seating for anyone that wants to enjoy their meal inside. I ordered the Veggie Sandwich (but have also tried the Sleeper, another sandwich worth trying!) which is avocado, sprouts, cucumber and "everything" - their garlic mayo, jalapeno relish and lettuce - all on a ginormous Dutch Crunch roll. I didn't realize how HUGE the sandwich was until I opened it up. Note to self: It's not safe to drive and eat a Darby's sandwich at the same time. The jalapeno relish added an unexpected but very welcomed spicy kick. It's not enough spice to make sweat roll down your face but you can't ignore it. I didn't expect to taste anything spicy so if you don't like or can't handle spice, opt out of the relish. The staff is mildly friendly but nothing exceptional. I guess they're there just to put your sandwich together. Darby Dan's is a little hidden - you could miss it if you're not sure what you're looking for. Just keep your eyes peeled to the right otherwise you'll miss the parking lot!

    So, Darby Dan's has been around for 40+ years but in all the times I've driven by this street to get to my Auntie's house for the past 25+ I never knew that some pretty damn awesome sandwiches come out of this place! My cousin told me about DD's about a couple years ago but since I don't live/work in the area, it's close to impossible to get to. So, after attending the Giants Parade last Wednesday (WOO HOO GIANTS!!!) my cousin suggested we go to DD's for lunch, I was so down! DD's is a little hard to find, well at least the first time around. Actually, the first time I tried to go, I couldn't find it at all and the next thing you know I was on the freeway and ate at Ike's instead. I had their signature sandwich, the Darby Dan on dutch crunch with everything except tomato and jalapeno. I thought $7.25 for a sandwich was a little steep but since the cousin was paying, no biggie! Jk!! But no, when I saw how big it was, it looked well worth it. Oh yeah, when making your cheese choice, make sure to tell the lady (they're all lady sandwich makers) otherwise, they'll just put provolone. Anyhow, I took a bite into my sandwich and oh man, that had to be one of the best dutch crunch bread I've ever had! It had a hint of sweetness and even better, it didn't leave the top of my mouth hurting! The sandwich was really delicious, I think what made it really good was the garlic mayo they use, which complimented the meat. It never fails that I can finish a footlong Subway sandwich or a large Togo's sandwich but damn, I barely finished half of my sandwich, which I wrapped up and had for dinner later that night...and it tasted even better! So glad I finally got to have a DD's sandwich. It was an awesome sandwich to end an awesome day! SF GIANTS - 2010 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!!!

    When I have an after-work sandwich craving, I head to Darby Dan's. The Sleeper is a popular choice but I don't like cold cuts, so I opt for the crab salad sandwich, which goes delightfully well with the garlic mayo spread. The dutch crunch gets pretty stale by 5pm but I guess I can't expect them to bake a fresh loaf right before closing time. The store is easy to miss, so look out for the Ramada Suites next door.

    I came across this deli while in South San Francisco for work. This is where I discovered "Dutch Crunch" bread. This is apparently a bay area specialty and very good. I've been here twice. The first time I just got a regular turkey sandwich on dutch crunch with everything on it and the second time I ordered their specialty, which is crab salad on dutch crunch. Both sandwiches were amazing and had lots of flavor. One of the best things about the sandwiches is that they use jalapenos as a topping, but it's more of a spreadable jalapeno relish, which is awesome. They have a nice selection of chips and sodas as well. This is definitely a must-visit deli when in the Bay Area.

    What I didn't realize about this place is that it's not a tiny sandwich shop with no seating. It's more like a sports bar with plenty of seating, TVs, sticky tables, an ATM, and GRILLED sandwiches. They have a wide variety of specialty burgers (e.g., stuffed meatball, tuna), double dogs on dutch crunch, grilled cheese, tuna melts, grilled chicken sandwiches, meal sized salads, and homemade soups. My (untoasted) tuna salad sandwich ($5.75) on dutch crunch was hefty and satisfying but I don't think I ordered the right thing. The tuna salad was fine (tuna + mayo), but the mayo in the tuna salad overwhelmed their famous jalapeno spread and garlic spread. I didn't taste that much of either spread and should have asked for extra jalapeno spread. I'm not a fan of shredded iceberg lettuce and also miss having onions in my sandwich. I liked how their sandwich wasn't as messy and soggy as Little Lucca's. On the other hand, Little Lucca's garlic spread is much stronger and their sandwiches are larger too. You choose your bread and the extras you want: garlic spread, mayo, yellow mustard, crushed jalapeno spread, shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes. Cheese is an extra 50 cents. The sandwiches range from $5.75 - $7.95 each.     I only get 2 things when I go here. From the grill, it's the French Dip sandwich which I ask them to add grilled onions to along with extra au-jus. At the cold counter it's all about the Sleeper (ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese with your choice of condiments on a Dutch Crunch roll.) I always ask for extra jalapeno spread (my favorite of any sandwich shops I frequent.) Been going here since '97. 2 main things I've noticed within the last few years is that the sandwiches are getting smaller and the Dutch Crunch just doesn't taste the same (thinking when they changed owners they went with a different bakery but I could be wrong) and at times it's more flat bread then a roll (no BS!!!) Other than that, it's still 1 of 2 spots (won't name drop the other but look for it in my reviews soon) that I'll go for a sandwich in South City.

    Went for lunch here today with a friend..... Got the sleeper-which was good!! But it was missing jalapenos! Unless I read wrong n wasn't supposed to come with any... Waiting to get charged-not good. Took too long.. I only get a 30 minute lunch... :/ needless to say I literally had to stuff the food down my throat! All in all it was good. :)

    One of the better sandwich spot in Nor-cal. Very busy at times but always a great sandwich. Although their signature Darby dan's sandwich original came from Roy's deli. Its all good just the same.
